CDS1 -> CDS2 upgrade - MYMUT!

Posted by: tonytronic on 08 March 2003

MYMUT?... that's Make Your Mind Up Time! Confused

I've a Naim CDS-1 CD player circa 1995, and have only a few days to decide whether to pay approx 1700 Pounds for the official Naim upgrade to a CDS-2.
(The offer ends at the end of this month... Eek DON'T PANIC!!!)

It currently works fine and sounds great, so I don't know whether to upgrade it or not. The other option would be to upgrade the pre-amp instead, possibly to the new NAC252, thought that would cost significantly more, I believe!
Please, I seriously need advice on this while the option is still open, so if you have relevent experience on this, please let me have it...!

(BTW, the CDS feeds NAC82/Supercap, NAP250, NAC-A5 to Neat Vito's (and seperate 6mm mains spur to feed all).

Tony

I have three friends who have taken advantage of this upgrade. Is is excellent v.f.m. and will transform the sound of your CDS.

Paul Darwin was telling me a few days ago, that the end of March MAY be the cut-off point.

I guess it's a case of WIGIG.

Get on with it!

tony, am I correct in thinking that if you upgrade to the cds2, not only should it sound better (I have never heard the cds1, I own a cds2) but wouldn`t that move greatly extend the life of the player? I had thought that the cds2 did away with that whatchamacallit ring that tends to wear out on the cds1. Can someone else confirm this. If true, then your money is an investment in longevity as well as in sound. I would think this move would be a good one unless you sold the cds1 and put it towards an even better source such as (allegedly) the cds3. However, that`s alot more money, obviously. Hope you make the right decision, david

You are indeed correct. Put it this way - you get your old case back with a completely new CD player inside.

That's why it's such cracking v.f.m.

Don't forget that the CDS2/CDPS will have a greater residual value than CDS1/CDPS.

cheers, Martin (CDS2/CDPS user).

And you can swap out the CDPS and replace it with an XPS2 as well at some point

otherwise you will have to go straight to CDSiii/XPS2

I had the upgrade done to my CDS a while back and consider it excellent value for money.

You get the peace of mind knowing that you have a brand new CD head unit and hopefully the availability of spares in the unlikely event of a failure for a good few years on.

At the same time get you will get your CDPS serviced and your original burndy modified by Naim for it to work with the CDS2

You would then also be in a position to upgrade in stages from CDPS to s/h XPS or new XPS2.. both worthwhile upgrades and then finally to CDS3 sometime in the future.

I am sure you would not regret making this decision.
