What size plasma should I buy ??

Posted by: JamH on 07 November 2008

Hello all,

I am sure this question has been asked before but I am really new to this high-def TV stuff.

I want to buy a plasma TV [not LCD] and I am looking at Panasonic. My choice is between 37" and 42" inch. The 37" is not full HD but the 42" is. [My family are the ones telling me to buy such a TV ... and recommending plasma].

I intend to place it over a fireplace and the distance from wall to seat is about 9 feet [3 metres] ... Is 42 inch too big ??

Thanks

James H.

We have used the Pany 102" as a display for an HDX demo. It was quite impressive... Big Grin

Get the 42 inch. I have it in a larger room now but have used it before in a setting similar to yours and it worked really well.

Hi,

My room size is 14' by 12' and i have a wall-mounted 42" plasma which seems just about right.
Viewing distance about 8ft.
Try and "dem" a couple of different sizes if you can - good luck and happy viewing.

In my view the 42 would be a good fit, if not bigger if you want a real cinema experience. Nothing more frustrating than being stuck with a TV set that is too small.

There is no way on God's green earth that a 42 will be too big.

I have the 37" and sit about 10-12 feet away, I could easily have the 42" but where we site the TV a bigger set would dominate the room, picture is amazing, sound is average but I route it through the Nait for films/music etc. Initially it looked huge but after a few days I was thinking - should have got the 42"! Go for it, you know you want the bigger one!!!

You get used to the extra size really quickly. Most people say the bigger the better, but it depends on how well it's erected. However if it is too large it could also cause problems.

42"

We've just bought the 42" Panny. Very impressed, watched the footy today (on SD) and that was quite good. DVDs look ok too, will get a blue ray sometime.

It's got full HD (1080p) so we are waiting for Sky to get around to bringing us a new box Frown.

I booked it a couple of weeks ago but December 20th was the earlies date they could fit us in! So much for the credit crunch...

We were advised that viewing distance should be at least 3x the width of the screen (not the diagonal size).

Thanks everyone .. there is total agreement in favour of 42" versus 37". So it looks like I will be getting a 42" !! ... James H.

You won't regret a PZ80 - I'm finding it really shows up the differences in broadcast quality, and HD DVD is amazing! Sky HD coming on Thursday!

Depends on the size of your room and whether you want the TV to dominate it or not. If you have a spare cardboard box, cut it to the size of the panel and see if it is too big.

Not sure why you are choosing plasma over LCD. I've seen many that suffer colour bleeding, particularly around edges of black. There are one or two that eliminate it - B&O being one of them. For me LCD is more stable, favourites being Samsung and more recently Philips (producing more natural colours).

Andrew, I took 6 months umming and arring over what TV to get, the decision to go plasma over LCD was the easiest, the colours are far more natural, everything about the picture was better with plasma. No contest!

I did the cardboard cutout trick, well worth it!
