I’ve sent the 3.5/flatcap packing
Posted by: Nigel Cavendish on 31 October 2003
I had them for 7 and 6 years respectively and enjoyed every minute.
But what with the myriad of formats that it wouldn’t play (mp3, sacd, dvd and so on) and the increasing number of copy protected discs, I decided it was time for a change and I wanted a one size fits all solution.
Having experimented in the past with cd walkmans and more latterly with a cheapo DVD player, I have come to the conclusion that the differences in digital replay are not that great at the budget/mid-range end of the market.
So I now have a Sony DVPNS 930 (£239 from DVDPlayers.co.uk) which plays everything and is as good as the 3.5 was.
Oh, and yes, it does play music.
Still got the nait 3 though with no intention of changing that.

Are they £239? If so, I will buy one from the cash in hand I have.

I wasn't aware the Unidisk was only 239 UKP.

I'm sure the Sony almost bests the Unidisk as well!

Maybe you should spend some of your spare cash on having your ears syringed.

I compared my CDS2/XPS to my Sony DVD player and the difference was quite simply enormous. If the 3.5/flatcap wasn't substantially better there is something very wrong with your set up. Maybe it's the stands?

I would expect £4,500 of Cd player to sound better than both a 3.5 and a £240DVD player.
There is nothing wrong with my set-up, nor my hearing. A friend if mine still has a 3,5/flat/nait 3 and it sounded pretty much like mine did (his was set up wrong too presumably).
To be honest I expected this sort of response. There seems to be a mentality that not naim = not good, where the name on the box menas more than the sound it produces.
I am happy with what I have and that is the end of it reaklly.

My cousin has a Phillips DVD player for playing Cd's and although it does play them reasonably well, its not the same as a dedicated Cd player.
I played a couple of the discs on My Cd player and it had much better timing and soundstage.

Fair comment. I wish my ears told me the same thing. I would have saved a lot of money over the years.
Sadly (from a financial point of view) they don't.
Happily (from a musical point of view) they don't.

What I should have said was that I never saw the value-added of the CDX over the 3.5 until an XPS was added. It was the £2k power supply that made all the difference. The same was not true of the 3.5/flatcap versus the Sony.
The moral, if there is one, is enjoy what you enjoy.
