Yup its a classic
Unfortunately it is as true today as it was in 19-whatever
Snotty nosed dealers are still alive & well. I called in a London dealer few months ago & was given the down the nose look mainly I guess because of my repairing a buddies car dress code.
When I said I was interested in a CDX2 or maybe a HDX, the coffee & "suits you sir" started.
Fortunately for me my local dealer is a gem & I have a choice of two with the same post code.

i went into a shop in my work clothes totally plastered in mud and other things, bought an LP12 and the bloke was great. Been going to the same place for over 20 years they have seen all my kids grow from nothing to 19 years old plus. So now the kids are looking at hifi from there.

It's cringeworthy, awful but brilliant at the same.
Definately not the way to do it.

When i worked in hifi retail in 1980's we had a customer who wanted a t/t to play at half speed!
Why i hear you ask.
Well he could not sing along to his Elvis records at normal speed.
So wanted to have it half speed.
And yes he and his wife did go everywhere in leicester dressed as Elvis and wife.
They most definitely had a screw loose.
It was impossible to keep a straight face while trying to explain that t/t's had 2 speeds 33 and 1/3 and 45.
He said 45 no good as faster than normal.
Hopeless.
