If you have a Staples near you they may have a DHL franchise inside. They will provide a superb box with handles and ship worldwide, no account required. I have used their service in uk and have been thrilled.

They provide a free box which you can collect in advance to take home and pack your items and they are very competitive. However, do NOT seal your package as due to anti terror laws they will need to view the contents. They will print all the required labels and give you a waybill/tracking number so that you can track online.

Not heard that before - is it unique to Australian destinations?

No. The DHL driver unpacked my careful package that was staying in the UK.

8 years ago here in LA I'd carefully packed and sealed a black box for Fed Ex. The man at counter had to unseal it to check it for security purposes. The whole time he talked to me in low tone noticing I'd put $4grand on insurance and told me he had a great sound system also. He'd just had separate electrical mains installed and said the difference was incredible.
He kept busy the whole time and at the computer but nice conversation. When I left I wanted to give him my card for a listen to my s/h 82. There must have been 10 more in line tho by that time. Don't want to incite a riot.

Use Fedex but via Parcel2Go (half the price of booking direct). Airline security regulations are the same whichever carrier you use, some want to inspect the goods first but Fedex x-ray the packages so do not need to open up your carefully packed goods.
