i was just wondering does a cdx have a better sound than a cd5 with hicap

CDX2 will, certainly.
Original CDX should pip it too, but the sound is of a different Naim era.
Go to a good dealer and try them if you're able.

The standard answer here is that the cdx murders the cd5-Hi, and if you can't hear it your system is not up to the task.
Last year I went in to buy a cdx to replace my cd5-Hi, and listened to it at length through a 52-500-Allae system. I just didn't get it, maybe after prolonged exposure I'd see the light, but I really struggled to convince myself that it was significantly better.
Now, a cdx2 is a diffrent story......However, cdx's are going for under $1500, so if you prefer the sound, you've got a bargain.

Have a really good listen. A CDX should be well in front. That's not to overlook the significant sonic benefits of Capping a CD5. It's win/win - just depends on which sounds best to your ears, in your room/system.

I have recently gone from a CD5+hi to a CDx.
On first impressions the presentation is different I wouldnt say better, just different, certainly more forward and in my case a little more sibiliant . I eventualy traced this down to isolatation (belive all the treads on CDx and what it sits on ---- there true !!) anyhow after resolving the sibilance issue, the Cdx REALY comes to life, its a class above the CD5+hi, more detail, weight and presence to the music. If you have a good pre and power I would suggest this is a "no brainer"

That's what I found with a CDX. Too forward and lean for my taste. Nothing wrong with it, just not for me. I never got as far as taking one home, that honour went to a CD5 which I HiCapped shortly afterwards.

I think you may have misunderstood what I was saying.
I think the CD5+Hi is indeed a fine set up, but the CDx, once set up correctly is a far, far greater sounding machine. I would advise anyone to take the step to go to a Cdx (from CD5) its a significant step up. BUT you need to get the set up right otherwise its actualy worse than the CD5+hi.
Thats what I found anyway's

I understand what you mean Fled. With hindsight I should have taken a CDX home for extended listening, but I'm happy with what I got and saved money. The CDX2 came out shortly after I got my CD5. I don't think I would have been very happy about that. This was before I knew how to get advanced information from places like this forum.
