Is there a "Time Warp" with Linn?

Posted by: JohnMak on 18 July 2003

I have noticed that nearly all Naim users are LP12 evangelists.
Is there a reason for this? I am an ex avid Linnie and I'm now again in the market for a turntable. I've listened to several of the more recent (less than 10 year old) developments in turntable design and performance. At it's current price and performance level I don't think the LP12 could even justify shortlisting for a new purchaser irrespective of budget. It's pricing and performance is ridiculous compared to modern designs.

I'm really puzzled why it's still so highly regarded by Naimees because it really isn't that good any more compared to cheaper alternatives. Is it a time warp "cult" thing??

Hi Mick,
Many thanks for the good advice re the arm to buy. I'll be able to pick up a new RB300 in Singapore .... they're not really expensive there.
I have read some good reports about Dynavector MM cartridge ... I think is was called 10x5. I'm not sure wether to just use the ClearAudio cartrige until I can get a MC head amp.

I read all this with interest and it reminds me on what I realized 15 years ago when I got my LP12 as it seems that things have not changed fundamentaly. It was like a drug, and at one point of time I found myself confronted with budget constraints to finance all upgrades I desired. What I also realized is how dramatically the setup of the LP12 and the equipment in general affects quality. I drew the conclusion that I can get most out of the system when learning how to set it up. So I worked for three years at a Naim-Linn dealer, cheapest upgrade as I got money for doing that. What I want to say is that LP12 is highly difficult to set up properly, but I always found that the LP12 even exeeds the highest expectations when done so.
