Can anyone recommend a good Erik Satie CD. I bought a cheap Sony sampler disc yesterday that's less than great.

Pascal Roge has recorded several discs of Satie piano music. The trouble is (for me, at least) is that Satie's music is so variable. All three discs that I have contain some excellent music, but I wouldn't recommend getting them all straight off.
Almost certainly you've fallen for the Gymnopedies and Gnossiennes. These are both on his first disc (3 Gymnopedies and other piano works). Well recorded, well played. Might be on a budget release by now....
For an alternate take, I can thoroughly recommend The Jacques Loussier Trio's improvisations on the above titles. Done (rather obviously) in a jazz style, they are nonetheless excellent and stunningly recorded.

Indeed a lovely composer capable of the best and the worst. Much of his works are pure throwaway, as he didn't take his work as seriously as others did. Nevertheless, Aldo Ciccolini's accounts on EMI are mostly excellent, also in terms of choice - there is some kind of "compilation" on CD which I can warmly recommend.

"The Minimalism of Eric Satie" by the Vienna Art Orchestra is a wonderful record.
