Naim Owners Club - 1000 Al***s - What's the best Deep Purple elpee

My vote went to Concerto for Group and Orchestra, but on seconds thoughts it should have gone to The Book of Taliesyn, but other said In Rock or Machine Head - all great albums, of course.

So which do you think is the best?

For me it is Made in Japan, since it was a live album (ok it was edited a bit) and Deep Purple always sound best live. They are still at it today (without John Lord and Ritchie Blackmore)and I heard the personal pleasure of having a conversation with Ian Paice in pub in Henley-on-Thames.

As to Ritchie Blackmore, he was always under rated as a guitarist. He has his own style and has a great ear for melody, drama and musicality. Alot of people not aquainted with him simply associate with the song 'Smoke on the Water' although this song has brought him great revenue, he is involved with great many other songs eg Soldier of Fortune, Perfect Strangers, Temple of the King, Stargazer, Gates of Babylon are just a few of many other songs.

Steve Morse is also a comprehensive talented guitarist who has a different stage persona to Rithhie Blackmore (less moody, always cheerful and much easier to work with for rest of the members of Deep Purple), however for me Rithchie was superior in his contribution to song writing.

He may be underrated by “music critics”, but the masses considered him to be the No.1.
He was consistently voted best lead guitarist in the MNE, Sounds and Melody Maker reader’s polls.

When Steve Morse replaced Blackmore, IMO the live shows improved. With Blackmore, the live set was chosen to show off his talents. If he didn’t perform, it was a bit of a let down.

When Morse joined the live set was chosen to show off every body’s talents, initially Roger Glover became the front man.

Gets my vote for one of the most over-rated albums ever

I think you confusing MH with something else, but if I mention the AOR album I have in mind it'll upset loads of forum members, especially the one who put it in the top 1000 albums Smile

No. But partly the problem is everyone seems to rate it so highly. When I heard it, after getting In Rock and Who do we think we are, I just thought is that it?

I see no mention of Fireball, otherwiase Machine Head is a valid candidate to stay.

In Concert 1970 and 1972 are great alternatives to MIJ. Brilliant instrumentals such as "Wring that neck" and "mandrake root" even if the sound is below par, the energy is there. I would love to have been there. Saw them at Knebworth in 1984, but was a little disappointed to be honest. Maybe it was the bloke taking a leak behind me

Trilbyte Knebworth 1984. Was that the time when it was pissing down with rain, Ritchie played in his wellies and the audience were chucking geen plastic bottles...?

The plastic bottles looked yellow to me Roll Eyes
Seem to remember the Scorpions being on just before Purple

Yes I think Meatloaf was there together with a host of other bands during the day. It was really wet and muddy but for me it was worth the wait just to see Deep Purple. Winker
