Just Wonderin'

Any JS fans out there?

(That's Joe Satriani for those not in the know)

Mr.T,

Welcome back!

I used to like Satriani, but haven't listened for years as I moved from fireworks and stunt guitar to more considered stuff.

Maybe I should do a bit of Surfing with the Alien tonight, just for old times sake.

Andy.

P.S. I thought this was going to be a Louis Armstrong thread Wink

Like Andy, I listen to a bit of Satriani every now and then but tend more towards players like Steve Vai or Paul Gilbert for my guitar pyrotechnics.

He's a great guitarist but for some reason he doesn't always hit the spot. Really enjoy the G3 album, however, with Steve Vai and the superb Eric Johnson.

Surfing with the alien is a regular in my early saturday evening "rock-out" sessions.

I have quite a few faves in this catagory which I use as "musical caffiene" to help motivate me into getting off my butt & going out !

Thanks Andy

Right Guys, it’s time to put ‘Surfing’ away and listen to some of the newer stuff like:

Crystal Planet
Engines Of Creation
Strange Beautiful Music

Joe’s a top shredder alright but that’s not just what he’s about at all!

When interviewed, he gets annoyed when people start rambling on about how fast he can play. His technical ability is second to none but his knowledge of music theory is just as impressive. Do yourselves a favour, pick up one of the above and listen to the music he’s making, not just the chops!

Eponymous

This thread has made me dig out the above album from 1995. Some lovely subtle, considered, mature playing on here. Particularly on the beautiful track 'Home'.

I love the title track of 'Surfing With The Alien' but can never take it seriously - it just cracks me up. I think he's taking the piss.

Mission accomplished

"This thread has made me dig out the above album from 1995. Some lovely subtle, considered, mature playing on here. Particularly on the beautiful track 'Home'."

Yeah, I really like ‘Home’ too.

Similarly magical tracks are in abundance on the already mentioned later albums.
In particular,

Crystal Planet has ‘Love thing’ and ‘ZZ’s song’.

Engines Of Creation has ‘Until we say goodbye’ and ‘clouds race across the sky’

Strange Beautiful Music has ‘Sleep Walk’ and ‘You saved my life’. It also has the amazingly lyrical and catchy ‘Starry Night’.

Like I said, he’s not just a fingerboard gymnast.
