On the box

Hi
I have noticed over the years how much less telly I watch than I used too, which seems to be at odds with the populous where some reports would have you believe 4hrs a day is common.
I am lucky [unlucky] if I spend more than 15mins a week watching something, keeping up to date with news via the radio in my car and the www.
How much [and what] do you watch?
Cheers
To paraphrase "man cannot live by music alone".
We watch about 2 hours a day on average, the series we watch being Sky+'d.
Now that I am retired I get listen to music anytime during the day if I need.
Julian, I am not concerned so much with what I watch but how much (how little) & chatting to pub, club, friends, neighbours & family, it all seems much the same for everyone over most age groups. So much so it makes me wonder how some of the channels we have on Freeviww exist. OK Sky/Virgin is a simple process, transfer money from viewers pockets to Sky/Virgin pockets without the veiwer realising.
What I normally watch is one main news prog per day & evening viewing mostly limited to factual stuff, usually current affairs, science, nature/planet earth type progs.
I will watch some plays provided they are something special & worth watching (to me) I must sound really stereotypical grumpy ol git when I say that nothing in modern comedy is worth the effort, unlike Steptoe, F&H, Dads Army etc, no modern comedian can hold a candle to the old guys, the Big Yin, Feddy Star etc.
Question is what we don't watch; I might watch a program others in the house have on, but would not do so if alone. My don't watch list is soaps, anything like XFactor/Voice, prats dancing, stand-up comedy, cops-with-camera's, watchdog (yeugch), the repeats of repeats of antique, house buying or DIY rescue programs ........ I guess the list is endless.
Then who has noticed weekends has more of nothing worth watching than weeknights.
....... OK OK I'm a grumpy 'ol git.
But hey, telly OFF means Naim ON - grumpy is now a happy 'ol git
The Bridge, Homeland, Rugby, The Hairy Bikers.
Two to two and a half per day.
I'll watch an hour of news or politics by myself, usually right at the end of the work day, and then later, two out of every three evenings, the Mrs. and I will have a movie date (we are working our way through a Jonathan Creek box set right now).
Have lost almost complete interest in pro and college sports, and I used to be a total junkie. It helps living in a town where all of the teams suck (er, sorry, I meant to say "are in rebuilding mode"). I suppose the real test will come if any one team becomes competitive again...
Hook
I had pretty much stopped watching TV except when in the presence of a family member who might be watching something, but normally then I would wander off to find some music.
I rarely look at the listings to see what is on either, with my expectation of repeats, low quality tripe etc.
However, recently, I have got quite enthusiastic on certain programs. I have always been big fan of World Cinema, so recent screenings of quality foreign programs are grabbing my attention.
I have been buying complete series from iTunes such as The Killing and watching them on my travels on my iPad. Engrossing stuff, I was hooked and watched in every spare minute I could find - I listened to no music that week! Then I bought Homeland and watched the first 7 episodes on the iPad and have since been continuing on TV on Channel 4, with the plot interrupted unfortunately by adverts. Have been watching Those Who Kill on the iPad also and The Bridge on BBC4 is now compulsive viewing with my wife on a Saturday. Next I need to catch up with Borgen.
Also been catching up, again on the iPad, on Woody Allen films and some other World Cinema stuff.
Selective, quality TV viewing can be very rewarding.
As yet another retired bloke, I also have a fair amount of time on my hands most days.
I spend about 3 hours listening to music, and watch the TV in my study for about 3 hours every evening, although most of what I watch is on DVD/BluRay, with very little "live" TV viewed. Even the "live" TV I do watch is usually time-shifted - recorders are great, and it's nice not to have to watch the adverts. Naim involved in both music and TV for my use.
Just had a thought ... most of the live TV I am subjected to these days is CBeebies when the grandkids are here!
The only TV i make a point of watching or recording to watch later at the mo,
Are the BBC music shows on a Friday night.
Also the new series of Lip service.
Sport,MOTO GP, even then i listen to music while watching.
I dont have a large attention span any more .
Stu.
MadMen, The Good Wife, The Bridge, Borgen, The Killing & Homeland plus the News fills my weekly quota. G
