SuperNait - Sub Woofer Out.

Posted by: HuwJ on 29 April 2012

I've not used the sub out on the SN in the past but I do have a REL sub.

Some time ago I had the sub hooked up via the speaker cables but, while it gave some extra body in the mid range, when I disconnected it I found there was a lot more clarity and it was as if a veil had been removed.

This might have been caused by connecting the cables (speakeon?) to the amp speaker posts - I've since read that you should connect to the speaker post side.

I have floor standers (Focal 1027be) but the bass is still enhanced with a sub, so i thought I might try the SN output to see what happens.

Is anyone using the SN output? Does it help?

The manual says it is unfiltered so I assume that means there is no crossover and that the same frequencies go to both speakers and sub....

Any advice or thoughts appreciated.

Thanks

It shouldn't make any difference if high level connections are made at the amp terminals or the loudspeaker end, as far as I understand. High level connections are also theoretically the the better way (compared to line-level RCA) to integrate the audio signal into the sub's output, assuming you have the sub set up properly in terms of position, crossover, phase and volume - that is the tricky bit. The sub should really only be underpinning the lowest frequencies and many people have the crossover or volume set too high.

However, all systems and rooms are different, I guess. There are plenty of people who disapprove of subs with music, but I have had good results.
