Posted by: tonaimbutafew on 29 April 2012

Hello all. Is there a good site that I can go on that can tell me or show me how to see if my vinyl is 1st pressing etc an what it's worth. I've got the piper at the gates of dawn scx 6157 it's 1967 the actual record is a reddy psychedelic pattern. An cant find it anywhere.

Can anyone help me please

Hi Clare,

This site will show you what price items achieved at auction on ebay, so can give you a good idea of market value.

http://www.popsike.com/

But at the end of the day it's only worth what some one else will pay

Record Collector values the mono at £275 and stereo at £175 assuming it has not been played, if it has then it may be a little less depending on its condition

Still I'd keep it as it is by far and away the best thing The Pink Floyd ever recorded with the possible exception of the early singles.

All the best, Guy

One of the most comprehensive publications is the Record Collector "Rare Record Price Guide".

About £28 a copy. I've just checked on the 2008 copy and a mint copy is valued at £175/£250.

67 Columbia S(C)X 6157 (LP, blue/black label, mono/stereo)

second pressings have ' file under pop' on the right of the flipback ; first pressings do not have this. Second pressings are worth half to a third less.

Could you have a look for Snow White DPL 39003 released on Pye, plum label. I've scoured the web and can't find any trace of it. Must be classed as a rare record.

Where can I purchase a copy of "Rare Record Price Guide".

Sorry to disappoint, but the Snow White isn't listed. Only records worth £12 or more are.

Best confirm elsewhere i.e. Popsike.

You can obtain the publication from W.H. Smith or Waterstones. however it's currently available on Amazon for £24.61( =  15% discount). It's amazing how many variants of the same recordings there are in terms of label detail etc., all affecting value.

Thanks for looking Graham.

Can't find it on Popsike or Discog. Googling "DPL 39003" doesn't even get one result.

I'll check out amazon for the price guide, glad to hear it's not like Glass's car price guide, where you have to be in the trade to get a copy.

Where can I purchase a copy of "Rare Record Price Guide"  ... it is the annual of Record Collector Magazine - just google it - there is the printed and on line version - I buy RC every month, it has the best reviews and articles of any mag currently available (imho), but even it is not as good as it used to be ..... the series on British psych and Acid Folk were superb though

It's been played but is in near mint condition. It's the first time I've heard it an it's amazing so think I will keep it. It's amazing that something recorded that long ago sounds so good. I hope some of you new bands are listening to this an sort it out please. Thanks Clare

2012 Rare Record Price Guide arrived a couple of days ago, the Snow White Record is in the latest edition, worth £30.00. It's certainly very useful, although I'd say it gives an indication as to which records are valuable as opposed to giving an accurate value, but to be fair it does state this in the book.

Is there an equivalent book for classical records.
