The greatest pianists past and present

Posted by: EJS on 04 May 2012

Coinciding with the young pianists thread, I'm starting a thread to provide an overview of the best established pianists past and present. Let's hope we can do a better job than Universal with their Greatest Pianists of the 20th Century series!

Let me kick off with my two heroes:

Stephen Kovacevich

Some of the best collector's edition box sets represent all Lupu's recordings (except the Perahia duo disc he did for sony and some of his chamber music stuff):

In the classical sphere I like Barenboim, Anda, Arrau, Kovacevich and quite like Imogen Cooper.

It's amasing that how much of *Beethoven-schtick* he captured.

Would have liked to see his Chopin version.

BB, there's no hurry... that series is not perfect. My own peeve is that Pogorelich and Fischer were no part of that project, but why was, say, Andre Previn included and not Stephen Hough, who had already made his mark by the end of the 20th century?

I'm going to plead the 5th on your question and defer to your superior knowledge of pianists, especially during the latter part of the 20th century, where my experience is spotty.

My main peeve is that the series is out of print and good luck finding it for under 2000 US.  Someone on ebay is selling the single sets individually for as much as 60 US each (for two cds !!).
