New 2TB HD
Posted by: sbilotta on 04 May 2012
From the Naim site:
Double storage with new 2TB hard drive
Naim’s HDX and UnitiServe along with the NaimNet servers NS01, NS02 and NS03 now have double storage capacity through a new 2TB drive which offers space for approximately 2,400 uncompressed albums. The new hard drive also allows the user to save music downloads or music ripped prior to owning a Naim server to a ‘Downloads’ folder on the unit easily from any operating system (Windows, iOS, Linux).
Does the above (in red) mean that the new 'Downloads' folder, and associated functionality, is tied physically to the new 2TB HD, and not to the new SW version 1.6c ?
This would mean that "old" 1 TB servers with new SW version would not have this functtionality, correct ?
Can anyone confirm this ?
many thanks
Stefano
Also: Is it possible to upgrade my older 2*400GB to this newer version??

It was not possible with the 1tb version...i hope too they will change them plan for the 2Tb...
Fingers crossed...we shall see.
Great idea this "download" folder !
Cheers
Didn't get it...what is the pupose of this folder?
Cheers,
Ralf
Ralf, up till now it's only possible to store ripped music on the server. With this new approach, you can also store other files on the servers...

Michel
Ahhh, ok thank you Michel!
...so flac files as well?
I will be VERY happy if this works with 1.6C on the 1tb uServe!!

Not sure, but I think so...

According to the news section, the 1.6C update has nothing to do with the 2TB drive. My guess is that you'll have to upgrade to the newer hard drive (if possible)...

Well whilst I'm blindly speculating, it seems to me that the hard drive doesn't know what's on it, and that it requires software to write the files . . . so if 1.6c writes to the 2tb it will write to the 1tb, unless it has been coded to not do so (which of course is possible).
Hopefully, the new 1.6c firmwear specifically ads the new folder to the HDX hard drive and permits the DTC to load downloads onto the drive.
I'm not holding my breath.....................
From my Mac, i can see a new folder called "EX" is it this one where we can "upload" files?

Well the news story on the main Naim site says:
"The new hard drive also allows the user to save music downloads or music ripped prior to owning a Naim server to a ‘Downloads’ folder on the unit easily from any operating system (Windows, iOS, Linux)."
When I get home later today I will look for the new folder. I am guessing that with the server 'living' on the home network, one can simply drag and drop the files into that folder. At least that's what Naim imply with the sentence I quoted.

Do they really mean iOS as a supported OS for saving music. How would you do that? I think they mean OSX don't they.

I think you spotted an error! They must mean OS X. On my Mac I "see" my uServe as a network share, but previously have not been able to write files to it (but I can copy from it, which is the basis of my backup system).
Hopefully with 1.6C installed I can simply write files to a Downloads folder. If not I will have to see if there is an upgrade path that allows this, as I have resisted buying a NAS and with the new system I should not need to.
Well very simple answer. There are no new folders on my uServe 1tb since upgrading to 1.6C, and I (still) cannot write files to it using OS X.

Mmm..... I guess the key clue in the quote is it says "The NEW HARD DRIVE allows the user to..." instead of " The NEW SOFTWARE UPDATE (1.6c) allows the user to..."
Bart....Just as a point of interest. Can your Unitiserve see your Mac? When using n-serve, if I click on devices, my NAS is shown, but not the Mac.
David
Does anybody know what the upgrade to 1.6c actually upgrades ? Any new features, or improved stability or what ?
Cheers, paul

No, David. I'd need to be running a UnPnP server on the Mac for that to work.
Not sure this is correct, the US should be able to "see" the Mac's HD as it would be just another storage place on the network - like a NAS. The US works on fileshare, so adding a Mac to as one of the file locations should not be a problem. In fact Naim or rather musicline say it's not a problem at all. Funny enough many people seem to struggle though. UPnP on your Mac should only be needed if you wanted to serve files from your Mac to a Naim streamer of choice, not using the US in the process, e.g. using Playback UPnP locally on your Mac instead....

You're probably right, and I did think that that's the context -- using the Mac to 'serve' files. I guess I should try to add the Mac as a file location before answering with partial info!

I'd like to know before I do the upgrade...

How do we add the Mac to the Unitiserve? As you say, the serve is meant to find music on all hard drives connected on the same network.

I suspect you will have to turn on file sharing on the Mac. You probably just want to add the directory that has the files you want the US to see in OS X "Sharing" System Preferences panel. This is not turned on by default.
