Moving files from PC to Naim server

Posted by: Jejoma on 04 May 2012

Another question. I thought the answer would already be here but after some time searching can't find it.

I have numerous files on my PC that I would like to transfer to my UnitiServe. these are both ripped vinyl and downloads purchased from Amazon.

If I try to simply drag and drop I'm told I don't have the necessary permission. How do I get this?

Cheers, John

Hi Guys,

Looks like a good time to jump in and clear up a few assumptions and suppositions...

I'm afraid not ... It may be "just software" but the drives are partitioned differently and that cannot be done on the fly. It will only be the 2Tb versions ((finalised for production yesterday I believe) of the drives that have this functionality.

It is physically possible to have units upgraded in capacity however I have no details on pricing or availability of that service at this time - it would need a return to Naim for that though as it isn't a simple drive swap.

Also, dual drive HDXs (400Gb and 500Gb) would become single drive HDXs as the mounting used in the HDX for the 1Tb and 2Tb drives is different to that used for the 400Gb and 500Gb drives which means that only a single drive can be fitted. (NS01, NS02 and NS03 units remain "dual drives" as is appropriate for their custom install purpose.)

No - we can read USB pendrives for music files (we don't officially support USB hard discs as they suck a lot of power from the HDX and affect sound quality plus they can take an age to scan and index) but we don't allow for the "loading" of the servers from a USB device.

If you have your vinyl stored as tagged audio files then - using a 2Tb Naim Music Server running 1.6c which allows "downloaded" music to be copied to it then you could do that.

Hopefully that should clear up a few confusions...

Phil:

This is a little confusing - what "custom" attributes of the NS series make them able to take two 1TB or two 2TB drives when the HDX can not?

As I stated in the text that you have quoted - the mounting of the drive in the 1Tb and 2Tb HDX and the UnitiServe is different to that used in the original 400Gb and 500Gb servers and therefore only one drive is possible in the 1Tb and 2Tb units.

The NS0x servers remain dual drive servers so that they can back themselves up without requiring a NAS as is appropriate for use within Custom Install purposes.

Cheers

Sorry, Phil, missed your response last month.  I hear what you are saying ("the mounting of the drive in the 1Tb and 2Tb HDX and the UnitiServe is different to that used in the original 400Gb and 500Gb servers and therefore only one drive is possible in the 1Tb and 2Tb units") but I don't understand why.  3.5 inch drives are physically the same size and they have standard mounting holes on the sides and bottom.  How come the 1 and 2 Tb drives don't fit but a 400/500GB drive does?

Hi,

The drives are the same physical size and the mounting holes on the drives are in the same locations - however as I said the *MOUNTING* that holds the drive in the 1Tb and 2Tb servers is different and therefore physically only allows for a single drive.

Cheers

OK, I think I understand.  So If I bought any two 3.5 inch, 2 TB drives and substituted those drives for the two 3.5 inch, 500GB drives in my HDX, they would fit in the existing mountings?  (But they wouldn't have any software on them because Naim doesn't support that configuration.)

Is it because you need the extra space for heat dissipation with the larger capacity drives?  My 2x500GB HDX sure gets hot!
