will the ndx connect to your itunes library on its own or do you need to some other peace of equipment to make the talk to each other

You need a UPnP server. Is your iTunes library on a Mac or PC ?

Beginner - Google Majestic or Playback for UPnP servers- both are good and are just software which runs on your mac. They will work with your existing iTunes library and make the music files available to the NDX over the network.

I prefer to use XLD as a ripper instead of iTunes but use iTunes to manage my music library and Majestic as my UPnP server.

Unlike the HDX, the NDX cannot see file shares and pull files from a remote computer.  The music files have to be pushed to the NDX by server software running on a computer on your network as mentioned above.  The specific software required by NDX uses the UPnP protocol, which iTunes does not support.  There are lots of server software makers to choose from.

You have a choice of balancing the sound quality vs the file size when you rip a CD.  If you want to cram a zillion songs on an iPod, you might accept lower sound quality to keep the file sizes low.  Nowadays, enormous hard drives make this SQ sacrifice unnecessary.  Early users of ripped music often have older libraries of low quality rips.  You will hear he difference.

Want sound quality first......so i need a Nas/Upnp and some kind of software to get high reproduction copy's of my cd's

Posted on: 05 May 2012 by james n

So you don't need to ditch iTunes. Just make sure you rip as AIFF or Apple Lossless and you are sorted. No need for a NAS yet. Just run a UPnP server on your Mac and that'll get you started.

hi james sorry to bother you again ...try;d to use this XLD but not shore how it works .....was told if i rip a cd to my desk top and then transfer in to  itunes you will get the same quality as if playing the cd...... as you seem to be in the know is this true

Hi - Here's how i have it

Go to XLD - Preferences > General

Set output format to AIFF.

Output directory - just create a folder on your desktop and set it to that location.

Tick 'add encoded to itunes if possible box'

Then go Preferences > CD Rip

Ripper Mode - CD paranoia iii

Read samples offset value - tick box 'set automatically if possible'

Tick 'Query Accurate Rip database to check integrity'

Tick 'Automatically open disk on insertion', start ripping automatically, eject disc when done.

That should get you going. If you have iTunes set to auto rip when you insert a CD then you may want to turn this off to allow XLD to do its thing. If you've done the above then when you insert a disc, XLD will get the track and art info, start ripping the disc and automatically add the ripped tracks to your iTunes library.

Apparently, it is a NDS that is given away for most helpful post, but as I'm sure James is a very busy person - I'm willing to volunteer to collect it for him and give it a thorough test, should take me a few years, before delivering it to him.

Glad you like XLD is an excellent program and James has provided superb instructions for it.

Guido - as the NDS will follow the usual Naim release schedule (did we say next month...) I'd be happy for you to accept a 555PS in its place for me . Just for running in purposes you understand

Posted on: 12 May 2012 by james n

THe one song you've ripped - that sounds the right size.  When you look at the song in your iTunes library, does it show the bit rate as 1411kbps. When you play it using the NDX what does it say the bit rate is ?

its not telling me the bit size now ive started re-ripping all the cd's....it does say transcode after each song title .if i get info by clicking on the song name in itunes it say kind...Aiff audio file, i have turn itune off so it doesnt start to rip the cd's b4 XLD does .....again thanks for your help ...one last thing can you get album art on the ndx

Posted on: 12 May 2012 by james n

Make sure in Majestic you haven't got the transcode audio box ticked. In iTunes, go to preferences > general > when you insert a CD - just change to 'show CD' and then it won't try to rip the CD when you insert it and XLD will do its stuff. The NDX won't show album art. The nstream app on an iPhone or iPad will.
