1.6c Update disc stuck?

Posted by: The Meerkat on 05 May 2012

Help!

I have burned two discs using 'Disc utility' on my iMac. (Not sure if either of them are correct)

The first disc : 1.6c software updater.iso.

I put this in the Unitiserve SSD, and after about 30 seconds it ejected the disc. Then rechecked the software, it still showed 1.6b. (so I assume that did not work)

The second disc: NSSRv_upgrade_vL 1.6c.dmg.

This disc has been in the US for nearly 40 mins and can hear the US spinning. Is it updating, or is it now stuck?

Anyone with a Mac done an update on a Unitiserve yet?

(I have posted a previous topic, 1.6 Update)

Cheers

David
I've updated my UnitiServe SSD to 1.6c with a disc burned on a Mac.

Your first disc with the .iso file is I the correct option and should have worked.  After ejecting the US takes about 5-10 minutes, during which time 'please wait' appears on the web browser if you have that option.

Then my version in 'system status' was shown as 1.6c. I think the pdf instructions (which are for the HDX) say a restart is necessary but mine showed the version updated before I restarted.

You could try manually ejecting the second disc and try the first disc again?

Not actually sure what 1.6c offers us?

UPDATE ON MY POST

Both discs have not worked! Why on earth don't Naim give detailed instructions on how to do the upgrade, especially to Mac users! (I know, it's my fault I've got a Mac ) We are not all IT wizards you know!

Thanks for replying Glyn

I have downloaded the update, which now sites in Finder, downloads. However, the download is a zip file and contains all sorts of folders that do not apply to our lovely US SDD.

I have ejected the disc and tried the other .iso disc again, but this has not worked.

Please could you give me step by step instructions on how to do this.

Many, many thanks

I'll try but I'm no expert...

  1. Burn the .iso file to a blank disc having unzipped the downloaded folder.  Might be worth you doing another disc.
  2. Insert disc into US
  3. After a short while it will eject.  If you have the web browser open 'Please Wait' will display for up to around 10 minutes.
  4. The US should then become available again via the web browser.  I didn't use n-Serve app duringthe process so don't know what that twould display.  i also did not notice what the Naim logo was doing (flashing or otherwise).
  5. Check version under System Settings - should now be 1.6c

Good luck.

I have just burnt a new disc, 1.6c Software updater.iso

I loaded it in to the US, and it read the disc for about 15 seconds, then ejected it. The Naim logo did not flash and the browser interface did not indicate that there was an update going on, and still displayed 1.6b.

Phew, I give up!

David, i remember I also struggled to burn a good CD when the 1.6b upgrade came out. From your story, I assume that you create a copy of the ISO file on the CD. IIRC, take a look in the settings of your burning software, you must select something like "burn ISO" to disc. It creates a CD with different folders...

Sorry I can't be of more help for you. Otherwise, ask your dealer to arrange a disc fo. You...

Michel

Also on this topic....my unitiserve is still on v 1.5....this updating lark using mac seems a little uphill to say the least..can anyone explain exactly what benefit will be given by updating to 1.6b and then 1.6c ?...Naim should give more clear instructions to those users who are not "techies".  Steve.

My dealer kindly sent out an update disc FOC created by Naim themselves when the last update came out.  I would imagine you could get one from your dealer for this new update too.  Worth a phone call and might save you a lot of hassle!

Thanks guys...I totally agree, there is little or no instructions on how to update. I have again burnt an other .iso disc and it still won't update. The disc is only in the US for about 12-15 seconds, then it ejects it with no update.

Jason... I called my dealer in Cambridge this morning. He didn't have a clue what I was speaking about!!

And...our Unitiserves are permanently connected to the internet. Why can't it be undated via the internet, like a computer is.

Hi David.. that sounds like it isn't an ISO image that is burned to the disk. If you put the burned CD into your computer, you should see 3 folders... Desktop client,  Manuals and upgrade.  Open 'upgrade' folder and you'll see 5 compressed zip files (3 for NS01,2,3... 1 for NSHDX and the last for NSSRV_upgrade_v1.6c.ZIP).

That's what it should look like. If yours doesn't that's probably the problem.

If it does look like that, then I'll need to think again and maybe Phil will get involved.

If you find you don't have an ISO image disk, as described above, you will need to create one. I'm not a MacMan.. do you have any friends with Windows 7 ?

Any answers to my question above ?

Steve -

Just checked the Updates page of the naim website - it looks like the original  update 1.6 provided Internet radio & automatic back up to NAS.

However i did the latest update yesterday after some kind help by RJ & others (thanks for the detailed instructions Naim). In short i am not entirely sure what improvements this update has enabled - sod all from a users perspective anyway..... Official version below:

According to Naim - "Software Version 1.6C fixes some minor issues experienced by customers in the field. The software is not related to the n-Serve and 2TB hard drive updates but it is recommended

that all owners of these products update to the latest version of the software"

Thank's for that..may give the update a bash..I presume I just burn ( in disc utility ..mac) the 1.6b ISo image to disc ? Is this then inserted into the unitiserve whilst in standby or normal "on " mode?...I guess that us end users will work it all out between ourselves ! (eventually). Steve.

Hi Roger

Spot on! I put the burnt CD in my iMac and it showed the three folders that you described. I opened the Upgrade folder, and there are five zipped folders which include the NSSRV_Upgrade_v1.6cZIP.

It looks as though I have burnt it correctly, but now what do I do with that folder?

Put that CD into the drawer/slot and allow it to be read, then when it ejects... wait... as below.

If you've got a display (screen) you can plug directly into the US at the back, that will give you a much better idea of what's happening, but if not, just be patient & keep an eye on the web page.  IF it ain't all over in 15-20 minutes, it'll be a call to Naim on Tuesday, I'm afraid.

HDX Version 1.6c Upgrade
1. Ensure that the HDX network connection is working. Switch on the HDX and wait for the Home Menu to be displayed.
2. Check that the firmware version reported in the System Status screen (Home > System Setup > System Status > Overall Version) begins with 1.6.
3. Insert the Version 1.6c Upgrade CD and close the drawer.
4. The HDX will read the upgrade CD. This will take about one minute.
5. DO NOT SWITCH OFF THE HDX WHILST THE UPGRADE IS IN PROGRESS
6. The CD will be ejected when it has been read. Remove the CD from the drawer but leave the drawer open.
7. After a short while (several seconds) the Home Menu will disappear and a Please Wait message will be displayed.
8. After approximately ten minutes the unit will re-start and display the Home Menu.
9. Switch the unit into shutdown mode from the remote handset.
10. Re-start the unit by switching the power off and on.
11. Check that the firmware version reported in the System Status screen (Home > System > System Status > Overall Version) begins with 1.6c.
Important: Any Music Store and Network Share usernames and passwords may need to be re-entered once server software release 1.6c is installed.

"Bon chance!"  as (I think) they say in Salisbury.

Thanks Roger.

The disc that you used to update your unit, what folders are displayed on it? Is it the three folders that you mentioned earlier, one of them being 'Upgrade'?

I have another thread running, someone suggested copying the 'Upgrade' folder, which contains the five zip folders, and then burn that to disc. I have done this, and carried out your instructions, 1-11. Unfortunately, that doesn't work either

Yes, exactly that.

The US is expecting to find the 3 folders and will select the one it needs, so the 'just that folder' probaly won't have the desired effect.

See my post just now on your other thread - the 'quality' issue has to be worth exploring. I've seen the effect first hand on other CD readers (not Naim kit, but I only ever use 'branded' CDs these days).

Good point Roger

I am using TDK CD-R80. I would have thought they'd be ok.

Back to the drawing board then... that's exactly what I use.
