Integrating Naim ND5XS with Linn Preamp

Posted by: Aaron on 08 May 2012

Greetings all:

I posted this topic earlier as a reply to an earlier discussion.   I thought I'd start a new topic in hopes that someone might more readily see my post and potentially offer any solutions:

I am a new ND5/XS owner and forum member.  I am truly loving the unit and the sound...totally awesome.  I expect even greatly enjoyment as everything breaks in.

I am using the ND5/XS as an input into my Linn system which includes a Kairn preamp.  Interesting, the Naim remote for the ND5/XS DOES work the volume on the Linn Kairn preamp.  I have downloaded the n-Streamer app to my iPAD and everything works fine except for one minor problem...I cannot get the volume controls within the n-Streamer app to manipulate the volume on the Linn Kairn pre-amp directly.

I have tried the following steps (many suggested by Steven Hopkins who has provided outstanding assistance via email); I thought I'd raise this issue via the forum in case others may have had similar problems and achieved a solution:

1) Activated system automation.

2) Ran a 3.5mm --> RCA remote cable from either "remote out" 1 or 2 on the Naim to the "remote in" on the Linn preamp.  The RCA terminations on my cable are stereo and I could not get any volume response regardless of whether I used the left or the right RCA plug.

3) Tried changing the modulation setting to either on or off via the advanced system automation setup.

4) Tried a remote IR extender from "remote out" 1 or 2 on the Naim ND5XS with the light directly above the Linn remote sensor.

Obviously, I can get by using the Naim remote for volume control and then the iPAD for everything else, but it would be so sweet to be able to do everything via the iPAD.

I found a manufacturer of IR units (Calrad) and inquired about running a mono 3.5mm cable from the "remote out" on the Naim into an IR connecting block (Calrad 92-169) and then an emitter (Calrad 92-152) out of the connecting block and setting the eye over the IR eye of the Linn preamp.  They raised concerns about this plan, wondering what signal would be coming out of the "remote out" on the Naim.  I also saw a previous forum raising a concern about low voltages being a problem when trying to interface with older, non-Naim preamps.

So I wonder if anyone can answer the questions about the nature of the remote signal coming out of the Naim and/or offer any other suggestions?  I certainly appreciate any help and am thrilled to be a new member of the Naim family.

All:

By way of f/u, I am most pleased to advise that I received the IR units I described in my previous post.  I hooked them up today and solution suggested by Steven worked!!  I am now able to control the volume as well as other options via the n-stream app on my iPAD.  My thanks to Steven for his outstanding support.

Welcome indeed to the Naim forum! And great that you found a solution to your woes - and one that may come in handy for others as well.

Now, I am interested in hearing why you chose the ND5XS over Linn DS players?

Best wishes,

Peter

I loved units made by both Naim and Linn.  Primary reason for choosing the Naim was financial.  Thanks for the welcome.

Best

Does it mean you are insanely rich?

Because Naim is known to be higher price than Linn on the similar class products...

No, worked out something that fit our budget.
