Burn In on NDX

Posted by: RichM on 08 May 2012

I powered up my NDX at the weekend after consigning my CDX2 and my CD collection to history (not without a twinge of doubt) plugged it into my well warmed XPS. Maybe naively not expecting the level of variability in sonic performance as it has ebbed and flowed over the last couple of days. Sounding precise but lacking bass and timing with UPNP, great with USB and largely untamed with internet radio! Slowly improving as time goes on.

I am used to the burn in phenomena having owned Naim kit for 20 years but had not expected such profound variability from an electronic source as opposed to a power component. Spoke to my dealer this morning who said quite normal give it 4 weeks. Has anybody experienced similar?

I've been living happily with my NDX for about 2 weeks now and I'm still very happy with my purchase.  Now on topic about the "running in"....

With all due respect to everyone, I myself do not believe in the running of equipment. However, I do experience a change of "feel" and sound after usually a couple of days. To me this has to more with getting used to the new sound that is produced by the equipment. So to me, "running in" is more of a psycho-acoustic phenomenon. In other words: With me, it is more that my ears and brain are running in to the new kit.

And yes, I'm loving it more and more...

Ps. I hope I haven't offended anyone who firmly believes in the running in of HiFi because I respect everyone opinion on it. For me it just work a little different.

It is not a case of being unhappy with the NDX. I know what it is capable of in my system having auditioned a dem model in my system for a week. It is more a case of surprise that with the same source file 16 bit 44.1k that the output should be different between UPNP and USB.

Yes, I had a demo unit at home for a weekend before buying. The machine I subsequently bought sounded nothing like the demo unit for at least four weeks, then it settled down and all was fine.

Dont worry about it, just give it time.

I would say my ND5XS has just come "on song" after 5-6 weeks but I had new amps as well so am not sure component has taken the time.

Hi RichM,

I have also got a NDX and SN last Friday ,I was demoing the dealers NDX and SN for the 2 weeks prior to getting my own boxes. I was also demoing the dealers PMC 22s . I now have my NDX and SN connected to my B&W 685s. I have been playing music for about 14-16 hours regularly to get the system run in. I have noted a gradual improvement in sound quality . My dealer was quiet surprised how good the NDX and SN sounded just out of the box.

What are you doing to run your NDX in ?

It has been playing radio paradise solidly for the last 30hrs and will be for sometime to come!

I found the NDX, took about 1 week to run use in my case mostly using it as a sigital source. However I found in that config, just leaving it powered up, rather than playing anything equally worked. I guess if you are using the NDX DAC, you might benefit from playing out a signal. I found the ndac took longer to come on song and that definitely needed a signal through it.

Burn in longer than a few mins / hours is just your mind getting used to the sound, burn in over weeks and months is ridiculous

My thoughts exactly

A question for Focalist and Gianno have either you guys ever bought a naim power amp/power supply from new and listened to its far from subtle variation over the first week after power up? It is much to marked to be 'psycho-acoustic'

Hi Rich,

Haven't bought a poweramp (yet). But I have bought my HiCap new. And yes... I found a change in my own musical experience the first day(s)... however, I still firmly believe that to be myself getting accustomed to the new sound. I don't believe it to be the system itself that changes sound presentation over time.

So, how can I be sure it isn't the other way around? Answer: I simply can't.

But then again, How can people be sure the change is made by the equipment?

3 months for my NDX !  At times, it sounded awful, a right muddled mess, even at 8 weeks.  Those nights were TV viewing.  It was a long 3 months......

Now it sounding fully on song and quite different to when it was new

Started off quite lean, crystal clear (upgraded from Qute), but then as time went on the sound/bass filled out and gained warmth.  Run 24/7 with radio (apart from the serious listening !).

Just need to add the XPS2 in a week or so

My experience was very similar to Minigill. It took weeks for mine to settle down.

Started clear without much bass.

Became very bass heavy - too much in fact - after about a week.

Now clear but with just the right amount of bass - over abiut 3 weeks.

Reading the thread I thought that I was in a minority of one as my NDX took 3 months to burn-in.  Thank you Minigill and HuwJ for having similar experiences. Performance varied from almost unlistenable to "wow !" during that time.  The NDX on its own is a solid performer but adding a ndac and then a xps has taken my system to a new level and made digital very enjoyable.

It is always good to read that things will get better, but can I ask you how do you standardise?? You see radio stations clearly vary and my understanding is that none beat CD standard at 44.1kHz and 16 bit..... And then CDs differ (i.e. UPnP) so how do you ascertain whether the sound gets poor then brilliant? Regards Jon

The demo NDX I had in the system was 6 months old and I was amazed by the sound of the thing. Seemed to take mine a good three months to get the same weight and scale. In fact it all seemed to  come together rather quickly when it did. I can't say how much of this was in my head and how much was the NDX but what I can say is that it took me three months to be sure I had made the right call.

3 reasons Consciousmess:

I dion't listen to the radio.

I don't use UPNP I use USB sticks.

I listen to my favourite tracks of the period and i know them very well so notice differences in presentation.

How do you know that it is specifically due to that item of equipment "burning in" rather than other many confounding factors?

I do not have the NDX, but my ND5XS did take approx. 4 weeks to burn in properly.  I´m very happy with it now.

Yep - had my doubts in the second week as this unit sounded a lot different from the well used one i'd borrowed. After it came back from HQ with its new 24/192 board it sounded good from the off and stayed that way.

Hi,

I have a week old NDX and SN , since they are both new , do the burn in times on them vary? The reason why I ask is I am planning to audition new speakers at home . I had planned to do so after 1 month . From all your posts it seems I should wait for about 3 months . Any thoughts ?

How long did it take to start 'opening up'? Even after a month of running in, I found the SuperUniti still kind of closed in, and not that touching on vocals...
