What Kindle should do

Posted by: Consciousmess on 09 May 2012

Hi all,

I don't know what your opinions are of the Kindle app on the iPad, but I think it is brilliant as if one enjoys challenging reads, one can always keep their vocabulary improving.  I am such an individual and I don't know if others are as well?

Now, what I think they should do is this....

As the reader looks up words progressing through the book, the app (or Kindle) should take note of all the words looked up - with their definitions - so the reader has a consolidated list of 'new words' at the end....

What do you think?

Why not just download or just read the Oxford English Dictionary?

Learn a word or two a day.

Whereas Jon's method is just plain boring........

I'd be surprised if Kindle isn't already doing this. It's so obvious and so commonplace with other apps.

Under A Bridge with Dick & Harry - it begins with a story about an Aardvark and ends up with tales of a Zebra. It was one of my favourite quotes from Benny The Ball in Top Cat.

I think it would be a great idea - I wonder why they haven't done it

Mind you I read about one book a year - the last one was the Philip Pullman trilogy

However, like George W Bush said most fiction comes across as if somebody just made it up.

I like the Kindle app though I wish I could rip all my books to it - I detest printed books taking up valuable shelf space I could devote to CDs. I wish it had been invented 50 years ago as I would never had to had to store a printed book and my mother wouldn't have chucked out all my Green Lantern comics

Thanks Guy! Surely there are computer programming experts on this forum that can program this?? Or perhaps contact the Kindle guys and suggest it!! Jon PS And I am proud to be in the 'boring' camp!!

Here is an addendum to this thread I started as I have found out the solution. So for any of you who enjoy reading challenging nonfiction on Kindle, the way to collate the new words you look up as you go along is to highlight them. Job done, and at the end of the book you have a list of all the new words you have learnt from that book. Great for those with interest in academia! Jon
