NDX digital out at 96kHZ 24bit

Posted by: Consciousmess on 10 May 2012

Hi all,

I have promptly received my NDX and I am mightily impressed with it!  I am connecting it to the nDAC which has warmed well with its XPS but now I am perplexed why the digital out is 96kHz 24bit and not 176kHz which is what recording studios use.

Could anyone explain why this is so??

And secondly, I have recently secured a stable and reliable broadband connection at 8Mb/sec but note that reviewers recommend a wired connection for better fidelity.  I know ethernet cables are very cheap, but surely if I have a great broadband connection I will not benefit from a wired connection!

Or am I missing something??!!

Cheers

Hi, you might want to set Digital Output to 'Native' in the setup menu !    The 96/24 setting is used if your DAC doesn't handle all native resolutions.

The performance of your broadband service has not much bearing on the performance of your Wireless network.  Wireless performance will be limited by your wireless router's capabilities and by the environment around your place, whereas a wired connection will give you all the throughput that your equipment is capable of.

Somewhat simplified, but the principle is right I think...

Thank you, sir and I will modify accordingly! Jon

Your broadband speed is the speed that the Internet enters your house at (you say 8Mbps). It's got nothing to do with your network speed (wired or wifi). Your wifi speed is likely to be 54Mbps, though it will be reduced by obstacles, distance etc. between devices. Your internal wired network is likely to be 100Mbps and isn't particularly bothered by distance, line of sight, etc. Your NDX has a 100Mbps network card in it. If storing audio files on network then you'd be best off using an ethernet cable rather than wifi. Cheers Ian

OK cheers Ian. So will my sound quality of UPnP improve or just be more stable?? I have ordered an ethernet cable that will arrive tomorrow. Cheers Jon

That depends on how your wireless network is performing. In an ideal world it would not make much difference but in today's world of wireless congestion and interference, wired is king and wired is, for sure, more stable.  You done right with the cable my friend!

Great to hear of yet another purchase of the NDX.  Be warned though that the performance is very variable for the first 3 months (mine varied from awful to superb).  It settles down eventually and is rather special with a ndac and xps.

Don't forget to apply system automation if possible.  It's the icing on the cake and means you can control everything with an ipod/pad/phone.
