I love speedway racing.

All the action (and there is penty of it) right in front of you, the smell, the noise

But there are plenty of crashes and injuries, usually when riders smack into the wall/fence in very close proximity to those riders.

Speedway is run to a tight budget (with only a limited number of supporters) but really, I wonder if it's about time safety was stepped up significantly. Motorsport is dangerous but as Jackie Stewart prove dwith F1, you can make it less so. Greater protection for the riders perhaps, wider run offs on turn 1/2..?

No way would the large numbervof major crashes/injuries and death be allowed/tolerated with no changes if it was a 'big' motorsport. Time to move with the times I think.

Jamie,

I just spotted this news, always sad. I have never been to a speedway event, seen demos.

We were regular Speedworth, spectators.

As regards Speedway safety not sure what can be done, the closed, close in environment is what makes it so  special, would MGP type air bags work? May be some way of getting the fence supports away from the smooth fence. Something similar was done in American racetracks to stop the cars hitting the uprights.
