Can Windows Media Player be Disabled or Removed from Win7

Posted by: HuwJ on 15 May 2012

I've entered Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network and Sharing Center/ Media Streaming Options

Show Devices on: Local Network

I've 'Blocked All'

Which includes:

Media Programs on this PC and remote connection....

Huw-PC

NDX-4844

NDX-92FD

When I use nStream I still get?

Huw-PC (JRiver Server) --- which I want

Huw-PC: Windows Media Player --- which I don't want and according to the above, I thought would not be available.

I would like to avoid the server turning up on nStream and make sure I don't have two servers active on my PC.

Anyone know  how I can remove or disable WMP on a Windows 7 PC?

Regards

Huw

You can remove it completely easily enough: Control Panel/Programs/Uninstall a program.

I've removed WMP completely (as per above) from all PCs in my house to avoid it getting its mucky paws on my files.

CC, I don't have the option to uninstall WMP in 'Uninstall or change a program'

Is it elsewhere?

ML, Thanks, that link helped deactivate WMP.

Go to control panel, programs and features, turn windows features on and off, and remove it from there. Cheers Ian

Hi McGhie

That's what MLs link pointed me to and I have disabled it.

Thanks

Huw, Apologies, I hastily wrote my earlier post without looking what I'd done, and as I haven't seen any sign of WMP for a while, I wrongly assumed I'd uninstalled it altogether soon after I got my Windows 7 laptop.

Just got home and checked for myself, and it seems I've only turned it off, exactly as described above.

what????? why???  Isn't this your NDX?  Do you think this might have something to do with your playback problems with MC?

Blocking these services has made no difference either way. I can still run the NDX with nStream and I can still see the NDX on JRiver. These streams seem to apply only to WMP - which I have removed.

Mosty of the time nStream glitches in one way or another (or is it whichever server I'm using) and it still does not work correctly.

Peter's point in his post re pushing songs from JRiver seems to imply that the NDX is not capable of being controlled from MC17 (or any other server - information that is not generally available), which is why it keeps crashing.

I have never been able to get WMP to play FLACs to my NDX, even with the various ripping, tagging and FLAC palying add ons (Shark etc).

It would be good to find a server that will play FLAC albums and playlists using nStream 100% of the time. So far my experience of trying to run the NDX has been poor.

It would be helpful if Naim put a sticky on this page telling users which UPNP servers work and with which type of files and to what extent. So far I've been spending good money after bad, I'm none the wiser and what I've read seems to be a case of the blind leading the blind. Which can only lead to lost sales IMO.

I assume that Naim have an expert in this field. It would be good if one of his jobs (maybe 1 hour a week) was to give some support to the forum with regard to technical issues concerning streaming.

I would hope that my dealer could help with this sort of thing but it goes way above their heads - they are HiFi experts not software support engineers.

Hi Huw Sorry to hear about all of your difficulties, though I'm not sure that it's Naim's responsibility to keep everyone appraised of the various merits of different UPnP servers. Sounds like you're having a frustrating time. I have run four UPnP servers and found them all to stream reliably, though some are more functional/user friendly than others. One of the keys I found to reliable streaming (besides understanding what the capabilities of the different software I use are) was to set (via my router) the IPs of my network players (a NaimUniti and a SuperUniti) to be fixed. This stopped the intermittent loss of the network that one player was suffering. So, I've used ReadyDLNA and Twonky on a ReadyNAS (wouldn't recommend either but they did stream) until I stopped using the NAS, then VortexBox and Asset on a server (both fine but VortexBox very limited in functionality, playing only FLAC and MP3 with no configuration options; Asset plays everything and is configurable, in a good way). They all worked with nStream. I would recommend using Asset for streaming (and its sibling dBpoweramp for ripping) if you are doing it from a PC. There's a free version so you can try it out. Cheers Ian

Hi McGhie,

Thank you for your suggestion re Asset. I'll give it a shot.

IMO Naim are trying to carve themselves a niche in high end streamed music. It's no longer just HiFi and the world has stopped being a plug and play place. If Naim want to compete and flourish in this new world then they will need to look at their competitors, the likes of Sonos and Logitech for instance.

My DAC and NDX cost £5000 and it's far from straight forward getting it to work correctly and while I don't expect Naim to support third party software, some guidance in a sticky FAQ at the top of this forum section would seem a good idea.
