2tb Unitiserve

Posted by: Steve w on 17 May 2012

Had a bit of a thought  re simple backup /file transfer after hardware failure....I thought as the new 2 tb unitiserve can accept files other than those ripped to it directly, would it not be good if a backup file from apple time machine could be simply "dragged and dropped" back to the unitiserve to restore music files ?  I put this question to Phil Harris who informed me that as the downloads folder on the unitiserve is a SAMBA share, and as far as he knew lion osx is "fatally broken" then this would be unlikely....anyone else have any thoughts along this line ? It's a little beyond my computing knowledge . Steve.

Mac OSX Lion fatally broken .... ???? Since Vortexbox runs samba and my Macs seem to be able to drag drop and connect to its folders with the upmost of ease I'm not sure I understand - unless of course Phil means that the samba of the embedded WinXp is the real problem. Tog

Sorry - you must have misunderstood ... Mac OS X Lion works perfectly with SAMBA ... like Tog I use a Vortexbox and dragging and dropping files using SAMBA works with no problem at all ... it enables me to drop bit perfect rips from my Mac on to the VB. I also use Mac OS X Lion in some very demanding environments and it is a truly first class OS. It just works.

As Tog says there may be problems with the embedded WinXP version of SAMBA, but I don't have anything that runs any form of Windows to test this .... I have almost convinced my employer that we do not need to use Windows for anything and am expecting my department to move to the MS free world soon.

So gents..do you foresee the possibility of simple drag and drop of files to the upcoming 2tb unitiserve ? Or am I being too simplistic ?

I thought that was the whole USP of the 2tb model.

Guido

I also use Mac OS Lion, how are you getting bit perfect rips from there?

David - 99% of the time iTunes will produce bit perfect rips; however if you want to be absolutely sure then use the free app XLD, which uses CDparanoia (just like a Vortexbox) or its own secure ripping engine. It will use the Accurate Rip database to make sure it gets it right. If the CD is badly damaged it will tell you what success it has had. Rip to AIFF or ALAC or FLAC to store the bit perfect rip along with the metadata ... I and others herein have compared rips made by various rippers including Naim's and found the PCM music to be the same. So we can safely assert that a Naim US is just as good as Mac when it comes to ripping. The quality of metadata and artwork varies. I used XLD to rip most of my CDs .. All the best, Guy.

Cheers Guy

I never knew that. Apple Lossless from iTunes, or WAV? As iTunes doesn't support FLAC. Will give it a whirl

I little bird told me...A DTC for Mac is on it's way. Do you reckon that will benefit us Mac users?

Hi Tog,

How did I guess that VortexBox would pop up here?

Not sure how you manage to conclude that we have in some way managed to retrospectively "break" our implementation of SAMBA ("unless of course Phil means that the samba of the embedded WinXp is the real problem") - it is well known that Apple made a number of changes to a number of internal software components in OSX Lion when that was released. This included changing its SMB (SAMBA) Windows networking code.

This apparently was linked to SAMBA switching to V3 of the GPL which would have meant that Apple would have had to provide access to source code of Apples own development if it included portions of the GPL SAMBA code. In response to that they produced a fully homegrown implementation of SAMBA which only provided support for the latest incarnation of SAMBA as supported by Windows Vista and Windows 7 and was not backwards compatible with earlier implementations of SAMBA as used by our servers.

The changes to OSX's SAMBA code as implemented in OSX Lion have produced many issues related to simple SAMBA file and folder sharing and access from Macs - specifically when Mac users have upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion. (I have read that the upcoming Mountain Lion is expected to resolve some of these SAMBA issues but at the moment that is obviously speculation.)

Hah Phil  (no idea what this one means but it looks fun!)

"it is well known that Apple made a number of changes to a number of internal software components in OSX Lion when that was released"

Err ... you have to remember Phil that with the number of terabytes you are carrying (and of course the day job) you probably get to hear about these things - here in the woods news of the big smoke takes longer to get to us.

"they produced a fully homegrown implementation of SAMBA" - you've got to lot em haven't you ... "its my party! so I'm going to move its entire location - if I want to ..." Apple are always pulling stunts like this but i will say Lion communicates with Fedora (Vortexbox) just fine .

You will have to provide a lot of beer if you want me to fall in love with anything with XP in it. Just don't make the SuperUserve with Windows 8 embedded in it - please for the sake of all of us.

I am installing the OS X 10.7.4 update today and saw this:

The 10.7.4 update is recommended for all OS X Lion users and includes general operating system fixes that improve the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac including fixes that:

  • Resolve an issue where the “Reopen windows when logging back in” setting is always enabled
  • Improve compatibility with certain British third-party USB keyboards
  • Address an issue that may prevent files from being saved to a server
  • Improve the reliability of copying files to an SMB server

For detailed information on this update, please visit this website:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5167.

For information on the security content of this update, please visit:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222.

Per Guy:

"I used XLD to rip most of my CDs."

I see XLD can add the new rips to the iTunes library.  Brilliant!

XLD is really good I often use it in preference to the VB ripper. It is especially useful for quickly converting files from my old iTunes library from aiff to flac. Tog

Hiya Tog,

The gripes about Lion and it's SAMBA issues have been around since it was released and a quick Google will give you an idea of just how much of a mess it has created - as always there are a hundred different "fixes" posted that aren't actually fixes for anything. Be interesting to see what that latest OSX update brings to the party but I suspect it won't be a full SAMBA backwards compatibility update as they specifically excluded legacy SAMBA support from their new implementation.

Also, neither the current version of Windows or the current version of OSX really want to play ball easily and do simple file and folder sharing so the quickest and simplest answer (which is also the right answer) is not to use a PC or laptop to share music from and stick it all on a purpose designed unit ... whether that's a NAS, 2Tb Naim Music Server or VortexBox (whatever floats your boat).

As an aside Tog, I'm just about to rebuild my server at home as I'm getting a bit short on drive bays ... should be 51 bays when I'm finished which should keep me going for another couple of years.
