Yes it can serve and rip at the same time. And it can serve whilst I'm copying music to its Downloads folder. If you get a lot of stuff going at the same time the hdd can be taxed, but my NDS buffers quite a bit of data so it's quite immune to momentary lapses.
When I used the uServe as a player into the Naim Dac, it was slightly prone to skipping if I was playing and ripping at the same time, however. But in this mode it was playing, not serving; no substantial buffer in the Dac I believe.
Bart has the HD version of the U-Serve, I believe as I do), and they rip and serve at the same time...as well as Harry's SSD version. Just to reiterate that both versions rip and serve at the same time.
In this regard, I noticed that ripping would take a little longer on my U-Serve when it was asked to serve at the same time. But on the whole, quite a trick if you ask me considering most people will be ripping entire music collections for months and would really love to hear those rips immediately.
