Draytek Vigor 2830n ADSL 2+ Modem Router

Posted by: Bonner on 25 May 2012

Has anyone had problems with n-Stream not finding NDX or Uniti products when using a Draytek Vigor 2830n?  I "upgraded" from a 2820n and had a lot of issues with n-Stream not finding my network players on my iPods, iPad and iPhone.  I have had to go back to the 2820n.

I believe their current firmware on this unit doesn't support the UPnP discovery that n-Stream and n-Serve use ... have you contacted them to see if there's an update due?

Thanks Phil - there is an update of firmware that I tried to apply but it failed - will have another go and let you know.

Hello Phil

I tried the 3.3.7 update to the firmware and it seemed to work for a while but have gradually lost connection on my various "i" devices so I have reverted to the 2820n and raised a tech support request with Draytek.

I'm using a 2820n on firmware version 3.3.5.2_232201 and have no issues with nSream and i devices (2 iPads and 2 iPod touches).

I'm wondering if there is a common issue here as you are having similar problems with both routers, albeit it works better on the older model.

My settings are pretty standard, except that I have ADSL and Cable connections load balanced on the WAN side, otherwise my wireless is set to mixed(11g+11n) using WPA/PSK

My NDX is not used on the Drayteck wireless, I use a Sonos Zoneplayer as a wireless bridge.  Are your Naim units wired or wireless?  If the later are you able to test using a wired connection temporarily?

I have used a 2820 for about two years with no problems - there is something wrong in the 2830 firmware.  My boxes are on a gigabit LAN using Ciso switches.  If I connect my ipod or ipad etc to a second wireless access point I have which is hard wired to the router than everything works ok.

Hello Phil

Draytek have accessed my router and made some changes to some settings but they haven't told me what they have done yet (I have asked).  Everything seems to work for now but will let it run for a week or so before being sure it is fixed. Guess best advice is to raise a ticket with Draytek support if this problem arises for anyone else.

Thanks

Update from Draytek - they changed the channel bandwidth to 20 instead of 20/40 and configured the security on the device to WPA2/PSK instead of mixed mode. Apparently  mixed mode can occasionally cause issues on newer devices which do not support WPA; none of this was necessary with the 2820n so we shall see!

I have a 2820 and have never had any problems, however, I did install a 2830 for a friend when they first shipped and there was definitely something not right with the firmware. I found the Draytek support people pretty useless so at least it's good that they have suggested a fix for you. My friend does still experience some very strange things but the problems appear intermittent. I would be really interested to hear if the changes fix your problem longer term. Cheers

Glad you got it sorted.

It may be worth backing up the settings now, in case they get accidentally changed and you can't find your way back!

The Draytek stuff is great, but I'd advise against upgrading firmware now you have stability unless it specificaly adresses an issue that you have.  I had great 'fun' last year when a firmware 'upgrade' messed up the Adsl modem, reducing stability.  I ended up reverting for a while.  The Draytek forum is a useful place to assess the success or otherwise of updates.
