HDX Backups
Posted by: CariocaJeff on 27 May 2012
Hi,
Managed to backup my HDX to a cheap NAS I bought as a temp until I am back in the uk full time. looks like the backup software will only work when my computer is on which could be a pain. Tried to use the HDX function and set up the requiredfields on the HDX. However it seems to schedule the backup I have this through the DTC.Founds the add backup schedule option but cannot find how to change the source drive (currently set to D or enter anything in the destination drive field. Anyone able to help?
Thanks,
Jeff
One could be rude and suggest you read the manual. But in short its in the web interface somewhere.
Looked in the manual and couldn't find actually
I think you must be using some sort of back up software on your pc to back up from your hdx to your nas.
The hdx should be able to do this direct to the nas.
Set up a new share on the nas, hdx back up or what ever, don't restrict it with passwords etc.
This should then appear on the hdx as a location for backing up, ignore the desktop software and your pc.
Thx.
Had done this on the HDX from themanual, but then it talks about the default schedule for backups and I could notwhat these were. Something inferred to set these you had to do through the Desktop client. Found the place to setup the schedule in the DTC but could not change the source and destination drives. I will see if anything happens from the HDX tonight, as I guess this is when the default time is likely to be.
Quite impressed with the HDX and ndac. Be interesting to see how it stands up against the Vitus DAC to match my amp.
Jeff, I have my UnitiServe backing itself up automatically, set up as Garyi described. I know what you're saying about the DTC -- it's not really intuitive about the backup schedule etc. Gary is right though -- just set up a share on your nas and call it 'hdx backup' and with the web client point the HDX there for backups. I think that the default is once per day, and only an incremental backup (not rewriting the entire thing each time, only incremental changes) at something like 04:00 hours.
I tried really hard to "set up" the backup task, and could not do better than letting the thing just do it itself.
Bart,
Many thanks. I've done all that on the Hdx. When I try to get the web interface to run, I type thehdx name in and some text from the manual and hit enter and I get a page not found error. Checked what I've typed 100 times and reads as it says to do. Not very computer literate so struggling. Any ideas?
Jeff
I find the manual is wrong about this matter. Don't use the MAC adress or whatever is stated. Use the local display and go to the System Menu and then to the System Status. There you can find the IP adress of the unit. Use this adress instead...
Regards,
Michel
Thanks Michel that got me into the web interface
Still struggling but I think it is the cheap nas I bought (LaCie - bought until I bring my qnap back from overseas) it only let's you 3 types of shares - private - where each have to have a user name. Public - cannot create new ones just put files under the one already created in the root directory where, and USB share which I can't find a use for.
The public share works fine on the hdx integrating my hi-res with hdx stored music. The hdx manual says the share for the back up must be empty so guess I cannot put in this share
Private - I can see ones I create on the hdx, but not sure what to do with user name. Think I have tried every combinaction in the add backup option on the hdx, but whatever I do it thinks for a while and goes to the system menu. When I look at the backup option it says there is no share for this. Same result from the web browser.
