Naim Fraim Came

Posted by: rjstaines on 27 May 2012

At last, the cherry trees have grown again and I took delivery of my fraim at the weekend.  Have spent Saturday stripping down Quadraspire Sunoko Vent and building Fraim Lite (2x base+4shelves).  Assembled shelves Saturday, retightened feet and reassembled on Sunday with kit. Switched equipment back on last night.. brains on left, brawn on right.. will listen later today.

Has anyone noticed that the Cherry Trees are much darker in the latest deliveries ?   Closer to mahogany than teak colour, I thought.  Still, it's here now, and it's staying... top shelf of one now waiting for NDS !

Fraim at last. I think you're in for a treat, although I haven't heard my rig on SV. Wanted to, bought it, but couldn't. Once the Fraim was in it didn't matter.

Enjoy, Roger!  Unfinished, cherry wood starts very light, very blonde, and darkens considerably with exposure to UV from sunlight.  I don't know how the Fraim shelves are treated -- are they actually cherry wood and not just a cherry "finish?"

There are UV protection coatings that can be applied to cherry wood to reduce the darkening with age, but not totally prevent it.

I have a 12"x9" box I made out of cherry in college shop class 40 years ago,  It's a beautiful dark red color.  Cherry just gets better with age. Perhaps your shelves were made years ago and darkened in storage?

Thanks guys.  I was expecting something akin to teak as shown in the Naim brochure, but mine are more akin to mahogany, in fact the dark red that mudwolfe describes.  Bit of a shame because my lounge furniture is teak, however I have placed the Fraim at the other side of the room, so it's one of those things that I notice, but others won't.   Isn't nature a wonderful thing !
