N Stream question - "Unknown Artist" ripping with Unitiserve
Posted by: CDI on 03 June 2012
Just getting used to n-serve and have my CD collection ripped via DB Poweramp to Assetnas NAS.
All works fine however I am experimenting with a borrowed Unitiserve and when the CD is ripped direct to the NAS, n-stream ends up with the file under "Unknown Artist". Artwork is OK but Album and artist remain "unknown"
I can see the newly ripped files on the NAS under the correct artist name.
Is this because I am mixing Naim rips with DB Poweramp?
When ripping with the Unitiserve (on demo) straight to the Assetnas NAS, a folder labelled "MQ" appears which contains the ripped CD.
I assumed Assetnas would be fine with Unitiserve ripping to at assetnas and using nstream
Can't understand why the CD appears as "Unknown Artist" when veiwing on the ipad
the album art works fine but the tracks are listed 01 - 02- etc then in alphabetical order under the heading (Unknown artist)
I think it might be better to delete my entire music library ripped and working fine on nstream via my laptop top and starting again with a new Unitiserve but I am put off buying one if it ripps flles to be recognised as "Unknown artist" on n-stream
Any help much apreciated
CDI, I replied in another thread
Before you loose your mind I see where you are getting confused.
The purpose of the userve is it will aggregate all your music and deliver as a UPNP stream for NDX etc. It seems to me you are using the UPNP server as dished by your PC or NAS, ignore these and use the UPNP server dished by the serve. You won't have any issues via that.
In terms of your set up you would have one or more Unities/Qutes/NDXs about the house, one serve (um, serving) and a NAS for extend storage.
Thanks for the response
I really wanted to be able to simply rip CD's using a userve to my NAS and use the Asset Upnp on the Assetnas NAS to send to the NDX/S
And to be able to use nserve
And play CD's on the userve when required with a remote control - wife hates ipads!
Has all worked fine with laptop and DB pweramp with Asset Upnp
I want the NDS - when it arrives to be served by the Assetnas NAS really using the installed asset UPNP software
Think I'll have an early night and wrap a wet towel round my head !!!
I cannot fathom why you are so set on asset, but if you are thats fine, userve has no place in your life.
But to clarify, userve will do what you want far better than asset.
Because I just spent £570 on an Assetnas 4 TB NAS I guess. I just thought userve would provide easier better quality ripping (without having to use laptop and DB Poweramp) and playback for CD's when needed
Perhaps I have made a mistake?
No, not at all, you are makingthe right choices. Ypu just dont need to use asset on the nas.
Nases are fantastic devices allowing access to shared resources throughout the house and whilst out and about. I am in the us right now visiting family and have access to my nas at home.
The serve can utilise the nas for back up or to rip music striaght too. Also any other music you have ripped from other apps stored on the nas will get cataloged by the serve.
I think as mentioned in another thread your serve has an ip,conflict so you are not getting full benefit.
Thanks for the help
I think I need to get to know the userve more (& buy a new one), is the UPNP output of the nserve the way to connect to NDX / S then?
Yup.
What i am driving at is utilise the nas because thats a good purchasing decision, just notmfor upnp.
Cheers,
Have to admit that even without being totally sorted with userve I am mightily impressed with the borrowed NDX (with my XPS) and can not wait to install an NDS. Squeezebox touch will have to go elsewhere in the house.
Having my dealers userve with all its music certainly has helped
I am not needing a hard drive in unitiserve so will probably go for ssd version. Just toc clear my head, if Idon't use asset on the asset as NAS and use the unitiserve, is it ndx or nds not just a glorified dac then? Is it the digital out that gets the music to the ndx
Yes and no
The Unitserve is just that a server, I don't know if they have digital out, probably.
So your 'workflow' is thus:
Put your current NAS on the network but out of the way, because they are noisy. I have one in the garage, this way it can sound like an airplane for all I care.
Install your serve somewhere convenient. Again, this does not need to be in the hifi rack, and with it being ssd would probably be quiet, sorry I have never seen one, let alone heard one. Again this wants to be hardwired on the network. One option might be to put it somewhere temporarily, whilst you ri[ the bulk of your music, then stick it somewhere like under the stairs or what ever for the occasional CDs you will buy, or if you have room on your hifi rack, fair enough.
You set it to rip CDs straight to the nas.
You need a back up solution for your nas, they usually have USB back up, stick a USB harddrive off this to back up your music (RAID on NAS is not a backup)
The Unitiserve is now doing what its designed to, act as a server, it will also interrogate your network and collect data on any music it can find and pull it all into one list for you to choose from.
In this way you can rip or download music and store it on the NAS and the serve finds it, but store music not ripped by the serve in a different folder to the ones it sets up.
Your NDX and any other clients by naim will find the UPNP being dished by the serve.
And thats it.
That is a great help - luckily the Assetnas is totally silent apart from when powering up so in no rush to shift it to the cupboard unde the stairs!
My only real concern is how the Unitiserve feeds the soon to be aquired NDS. It it is via the UPNP output making ther NDS just a DAC really?
Perhaps I will just let my dealer sort it out bearing in mind how much I will be spending on an NDS & Unitiserve SSD!!!
Thankfully I have now sorted by not using asset on the Assetnat NAS!!
Thanks for the help - just need to sort accessing the US with n-serve which will probaly be fixed when I install a new Unitiserve SSD
