Unitiqute - lost server

Posted by: PG on 04 June 2012

Today qute is up and running for about two hours....suddenly it stops, nothing unusual about that it often stops once or twice in a session, I'm sure that's a 'charecteristic of the product'.

Normally I just wait a few minutes and it resets itself.

Today, no such luck, it says 'no server'. I look at the IP address on my network and it shows the qute there, where it should be. Look at the IP address on the qute and it is different...I haven't changed it.

Do a factory reset and it still doesn't find the IP, so have set it manually.

I have to say I find this sort of uniqueness a real pain in the _______ (insert your own word). When you pay £1425 shouldn't it just work. Why would the machine change IP address of it's own accord?

Somewhat fed up of this machine, an amp and cd player is so much easier.

I have not had this problem with my Qute.

The Qute uses DHCP to get its adress from a DHCP server, which is probably on your router.

Qute says "Anybody got an IP address for me"

Your router says "yes I can give you one" (ideally not, but something else may say that too, so the Qute responds to the first/nearest respondent)

Qute says "Hello thanks router, please could you give me one"

Router says "Sure thing" , looks in it pool for a vacant one, and says "100.2.3.4" {or similar) "and you can use that for 2 days"

Well after using it for a day the Qute will ask again (even though it has it for another day) and it'll get the same address re-issued. That way it keeps the same address.

If something goes wrong the Qute will try again 12 hours in to the second day and then 6 hours in and so on.

However, the time limit expires and the Qute has no response then it will try again, but might get a different address ... 'cos it started from scratch.

I use two days as an example - it is up to your router what time limit it gives. If it is very short that is not good, too long also gives problems. If you have set any addresses on your network manually you must tell your router not to give those out through DHCP.  It may be clever enough to check an address is not in use before issuing it, but many don't.

So it maybe your router and not necessarily the Qute, but if in doubt get your dealer to check out the Qute. As it is a dialogue it could either device that is to blame.

Setting IPs manually will sort this irrespective of the culprit.

Pound to a penny it's the router, not the qute. My Bt homehub dishes out ip addresses like they are going out of fashion. Including every time a neighbour fires up something in range.  DHCP may be great if you're going to keep adding or subtracting devices but if not then don't let the router mess around. Fix the IP for your qute. It is a highly tuned piece of equipment that is focusing on the quality of the music and is not expecting to constantly reacquire a new network address just because the 'feed' has momentarily paused due to some form of interference.

First person to mention their apple tv gets shot.

Hi my home hub manages the IP addresses, but as mentioned earlier, it was showing the address I had allocated and upon checking the qute IP address it bore no relation to the addresses used in the home hub.

My NAS was still on the same IP address and my lease times are about 12 days.

Still it's working now, but I can't help thinking listening to music wasn't this complicated before.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

First question - is your Qute connected to your network wirelessly or wired? If it is wired then are you using Ethernet over Mains devices?

Please connect your Qute *DIRECTLY* to the router via a patch lead and see whether the issue remains or whether it works properly...

Cheers

Hello Phil

Qute and NAS are ethernet connected to a Netgear switch, which also links to an Airport Express, which in turn links wirelessly to an Airport Extreme. This was the same set up as on Monday.

The IP address is assigned by a home hub, and this was showing the right address on Monday but the qute couldn't find it. I think the issue may have been with the express, because when I disconnected it and re connected the qute found the right address again.

I think for me there are just too many variables with streaming.

You don't still have your airport extreme running a DHCP server too? That would give you two DHCP servers on the same network which is "not a good thing"(tm).

Nope, it's all handled by the home hub.....as far as I can tell....

Do you know what IP address your Uniti obtained? Then at least we might get an idea of where it obtained its address from?

Sorry I can't recall, but it wasn't the same range as the hub.

Next time it happens I'll make a note and re post.
