Should the UnitiServe be able to find my iMac?

Posted by: The Meerkat on 05 June 2012

My iMac picks up my UnitiServe SSD with no problem (nssr****). If I go in to settings on n-serve, on my iPad, the UnitiServe discovers my NAS drive, but not the iMac. Should my iMac be listed here? As I thought the UnitiServe should scan the network for music (iTunes & other downloaded music files) Could anyone assst me here please?

Regards

Install the Eyeconnect UPnP software on your Mac. The UnitiServe should then see it.

No its nothing to do with upnp.

In system prefs, sharing there is an options button, in here is turn on smb. Which you need to do.

No - that will create another UPnP server - for your UnitiServe to see music files on your iMac then you'll need to have the folders containing the music shared as SMB / CIFS / SAMBA shares...

OK. I’ll go stand in a corner for a little while then.

If you are running Lion on your Mac you may find it still does not work, as there seem to be issues with SMB under Lion.  I have a 1TB US which will see the directories on my Mac, but will not see anything inside those directories.

I hope naim does not mind the link, but apparently mac users on lion can install traditional smb, i have not tried it myself,

Good find!

( Just don't read all the comments afterwards or you'll never dare install it... )

Yea, that does appear to be a programme. Apparently there is a terminal command which will put you back to the original SMB, and its comes straight from apple:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4697

Problem being you have to do that on each restart, which I suppose a script could be written for.

Anyway At your own risk etc etc, mind you if SMB is not working for you, installing something that does not work probably is not a big deal

TBH the *EASIEST* solution IMO is a £100 ReadyNAS Duo and a couple of drives ... it'll give you a nice reliable NAS and TimeMachine backup too.

Darn it, OK. Dabs have a deal on - £200 for a 1TB ReadyNAS Duo v2 (2110), and Netgear are doing a free 1TB drive too so I've gone for it. Been reading about all this stuff too much lately.

Thank you all for you advice on this one. I have a Qnap NAS drive, with SMB and SAMBA enabled.

Yes I am running OS Lion on my iMac.

Thanks all

Further...

How do I do what Phil suggested...Have the the folders on my iMac containing the music files, shared as SMB / CIFS / SAMBA shares?

I have gone into preferences on my iMac and enabled SMB, which actually has 'Windows' in brackets for some reason??

Even further!

I have gone into the UnitiServe interface, and YES my iMac is listed as one of the 'Music shares'. However, it is shown as off line! My iMac is switched on!

I think we are nearly there, but just need to find out why the iMac is shown off line.

You have turned on SMB now return to the sharing panel and add folders you want to share.See if they show up and can be accessed by the serve

But as the thread develops you discover the shocking truth! (Dun Dun Duuuunn) that apple basically screwed SMB up big style.

So if it does not work try putting this into terminal:

sudo sysctl -w net.smb.fs.kern_deprecatePreXPServers=0
I don't know why the font changed here, this forum software is really very very poor.
Now see if your shares show up and can be accessed. If they can thats great, but you need to put that command in every time you reboot.

Blimey garyi, that looks a bit Chinese! I have added the folders, but they don't show up on the n-serve interface.

I can confirm, that on the browser, the UnitiServe does pick up the iMac and shows it as a Music Share. But, it is shown as off line. Why is this?

Posted on: 09 June 2012 by garyi

Try that terminal command.

SMB can take while to show changes so you might have to wait ten minutes.

Can you not make the share on line, or scan it or some such?

garyi

I didn't download that stuff. Was a tad nervous what could happen. As I said though, the iMac is showing as a music share, but is it showing it as off line?

And as a i said put that terminal command in no need to download any thing. It's from apple themselves so I am sure it's fine

That command of Gary's simply tells your Mac that there's a device out there that it needs to talk to which doesn't support Unicode and NT style commands. I'm not sure why he thinks that may help since the UnitiServe should be OK with these.

Also, I believe that command will be wiped if you restart the Mac so if it fixes the problem you'll need to see how to make it take effect permanently - chime in if I'm wrong Gary!

If you have any issues setting this up Frank then just give me a shout - they're generally a piece of the proverbial though.

Basically:

1) Ideally set the unit to a static IP address - this is just normal networking good practise for any devices that are permanently on your network and provide a service to other devices. I would normally also set network printers, media players etc to static addresses as well.

2) Set up a couple of shares on the NAS called - say - "NaimMusic" and "DownloadedMusic" and give them full guest read/write access rights. You can use usernames and passwords for shares if you wish but that means you have to remember them and just makes things more complicated - I'm all for password protecting personal files but unless you have an exceptionally large collection of Pet Shop Boys and Village People that you don't want your family to know about then it seems unnecessary just for music files.

3) Wait for the UnitiServe (or HDX) to discover the NaimMusic and DownloadedMusic shares, promote the NaimMusic share to a store and ensure that "DownloadedMusic" is set as "Active" - then your serve will rip to the NaimMusic store (after filling the internal drive of a hard disc based serve) and it will use the DownloadedMusic folder as a place where you can put all your downloaded music.

Cheers

If you have this NAS then why not do the simple thing and put all your music on here?
