Termination Voodoo

Forgive my technical ignorance, but I have a question.

Does the type of ethernet termination matter?  I refer to the termination at the socket that will connect (a) NAS to one socket and (b) other socket to network streamer (ND5 XS).  

I intuitively understand that "bits are bits" such that any RJ-45 termination should be fine, but I also see recommendations on this forum for more exotic connectors such as "Mini-Com".
