Avatar? To face or not to face? Childish, Fun, Sad, Ego?

I have always wondered why people choose avatars instead of personal pictures for their profile?

Because I'm ugly.
Merrick made a name for himself. I feel your pain!

Mel Brooks brought John Merrick to the masses with his film the Elephant Man.
No one had heard of him before that film.
Telegram for mungo???

Stu,
I didn't know that Mel Brooks was executive producer of Elephant Man. Thanks for making me ask WTF's he talking about so I went and looked.
I`m just very ANGRY!!!
Mine's a pencil self-portrait from when I shared a cell with Dennis Nilsen. He had some strange uses for the mirror I used.....

Do you still have the mirror? I could think of a thousand jokes. But then again.....
Tony,
I know! I've seen the ways you use humour as an escapism. It's going to be Ok! I will always be here if you need me. Hush, hush...

Nighty, night. Sweet dreams....
The only avatars I don’t like are those sinister looking silhouette man or woman type ones, they really give me the creeps, people who use them ought to speak up and explain themselves.
And why has the man silhouette got a walnut whip on his head?
perhaps we shouldn't be told

Me neither. I own it and have watched it many times as with most of Lynch's films. I never saw that credit. He must have asked to not be credited. Really cool.

Nothing wrong with walnut whips, or cupcakes or twiglets...

Pat and Tom.
Mel did a lot more than just ex-producer.
He just took that credit because he thought that if his name showed up as writer producer/director, people would think it was just another Mel Brooks comedy.
When in fact it was a serious film that he had wanted to make for years.

Because he's Tintin.
Was it 'The Grey' by any chance Tony?
I thought that was crap, and looked like it was made for three and six in the snow. Around Smithers BC, apparently.
John.

Because he's Tintin.
And because she's Argus?
I see the niam forum woman avatar is a non-UFO version! : >

Or perhaps Daft Ada (Darth Vader for the intellectually challenged)
On the few other forums I use, avatars are far more common than photos of yourself, and although you can read someone's face, they broadcast something specific about yourself.
I guess a similar question would be why do companies have logos and not just an image of the product(s) they make.
However on dating websites having a photo of yourself and not your favourite album cover, etc. is probably more important.
Mine now just shows a ugly mug.
Stu.
Speaking of which, I seem to recall sending you one of these a while back

No, I meant the picture .
If you want the real thing :
.... and we really should chip in and get Frank Abela a replacement shot for his fuzzy malteser.
.... I'm also starting a sideline in Naim avatars. Here's my first one up for grabs by the highest bidder :
