HiRez Setup

Posted by: Kage on 11 June 2012

Finally got my Synology DS212J setup and working with itunes into my ND5XS. I definately heard a difference compared to playback playing from mac mini/itunes into my ND5XS. I'm very happy.

The whole reason to going down this streaming route was to venture down the high resolution path. I am however finding the setup difficult. The initial setup was hard for me, but manage to get there in the end-with a little help over the phone with my local dealer. Now with a better understanding, I have been able to create a shared folder via the synology web interface and named it. This appears when I search for shared devices on my mac, but my ND5XS doesn't see it.

I'm clearly missing something, so any pointers would be great. I'd like to get downloading some hi rez music to sample and enjoy.

Thanks

Have you set up the UPnP server on your Synology?

Your Mac will access the NAS directly via a network protocol such as SMB (SAMBA or CIFS), AFP (Apple File Protocol) or NFS (Network File Services) ... your ND5XS does not access network shares directly and instead talks to UPnP servers so you need to ensure that the UPnP server on your Synology is running *AND* is set to access the correct folders on the NAS.

That makes sense. Just need to figure how to do that within the interface. I'll have a play tonight, but I haven't a clue really! I'll give the thumbs up if I get it acheived.

Thanks

Managed to get my nd5 and nStream app to 'see' my 'HiRez' folder. Nothing high res in it, just a 16bit file for setup purposes. My problems continue though. On my shared folders on my mac and on the synology online interface the folder 'HiRez' is outside/alongside the media server folders (music, photo and video), on the nd5 and nStream it appears inside the music folder. This is ok if I search by folder and select 'HiRez' and then select the track I want to play, but if I search by artist, it shows two copies of the file. I want to keep my hi res files seperate from my ripped files. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Unfortunately that's down to the UPnP server that's in your Synology and I don't have a Synology here to even check that with - perhaps the Synology forums would be a good place to check for that?

First, you need to ensure that you log in to your diskstation and ensure that "Media Server"  is enabled.

If the above has been done, check that your music folders resides within the "music" folder which the "Media Server" which is essentially synology's upnp's software will look into for your audio files.
