Died while racing in Targa Florio.

Rip.

If the reports I've read are true, then it seems that Gareth's death involved a crash similar to that which nearly killed Robert Kubica, on the Italian mainland. If this is the case, then someone involved in the safety of rallying in Sicily needs hanging, as an Armco barrier should not be positioned so ANY vehicle can be penetrated by it. Perhaps Sicily is more third world than I realise, so I'll just shut up and never go there.

RIP Gareth, you were going to be a big star.

Apparently they hit the end of a section of Armco very similar to Kubica's crash. Those ends should be made so that a car cannot hit end on.

Very sad as no lessons seem to have been learned.

I've looked into Kubica's crash, and it seems that the Armco was complete, but Kubica's car caused it to break rather than absorb the energy. The broken Armco then pierced the car. So Italian Armco is like an empty fire extinguisher, bloody useless.

I've just seen some footage of this latest crash, and it does appear that the bare end of some Armco is to blame. Now then, does anyone remember the protracted legal saga following Senna's death? I wonder if the Italian legal system will kick into gear on this? The clerk of the course should be held accountable, I'd have thought.

As far as I'm aware, Senna's case was dealt with by the Italian legal system.

That's the same legal system that charged some seismologists with manslaughter for not predicting an earthquake.

Yep, a strange, strange set up.
