Newbie help..upnp

Posted by: Dablk on 23 June 2012

HellO, hope to be picking up a superuniti in the next two weeks.

Sorry if this is old ground but I can't find a thread which explains upnp servers that makes sense to me.  If someone knows a link Iwould appreciate it.  If there is an idiots guide link anywhere that would be great

I just need setup guidance? And help to decide what I need to buy.  The plan is to be able to run without a pc being turned on, save for initial file management.  I need a music library in flac on the nas.  The nas will be hard wired into a network switch which the superuniti will also be wired into.  The wireless modem router is also hard wired into the lot.

I also need to be able to create an mp3 mirror of the the flac on my laptop for iTunes to use.. But I don't need the superuniti to be associated with this at all.

Also what is the best way to manage files on a nas?  Is it no different to just creating a directory tree like on a normal c: drive?

Do the zen units on eBay work well?  They look like a poor mans uniti serve to me which would be ideal for my budget.  Does ripping on the drive make life a lot easier?  The nas drive is in going to be under the stairs so noise isn't really an issue.

All input most welcome.

Thank you for reading this far

Thank you for your suggestions.

Any links to actually using the kit.. Sorry to sound like a complete idiot.

Or do you literally file it up like a normal hard drive? And plug it in.  The pessimistic side in me just doesn't believe it is that simple.

Yea it pretty much is. Rip your music with your favourite ripper to your computer harddrive then copy over to the NAS.

The NAS has a upnp server built in which is porbably on by default, if not log onto its web pages and turn it on.

And you are set.

Not everything in audio has to be difficult.

Pretty much. Buy your harddrives. Slide them into the Nas. There's something software to install, but the wizard guides you through it.

Once youv'e got media manager installed on the nas, you can use something like synctoy to keep music synched up between your PC and the Nas.

My workflow:

Rip a cd using dbpoweramp.

Open up synctoy and hit the sync button.

The new music gets copied across to the other side.

open up my sbt and navigate to the new folder.

Hit play.
