So what happens if I update the iOS app?  Do just the new features not work or will the whole thing not work at all?

Works for me - NDX 192 with 3.13 (without updated playlist functionality)

Posted on: 25 June 2012 by Nick Rich

Anyone tried it with a SuperUniti?

Works for me - but no playlists Check out the info button now - and the similar albums button - in the 10 mins I've been playing with it, looks a lot better

Hi Nick,

I felt below function after upgrade.

UPnP browsing speed has been increased

UPnP lists are now alphabetically sorted

Cheers,

This will work with or after Streamer Firmware 3.15:

• Playlist support. Allows creation and editing of playlists with tracks from your UPnP library which can be saved to your iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch (see note)
• Play queue. You can now queue tracks from your UPnP library (see note)
• Fast UPnP browsing. Information from the UPnP server is cached on the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch for a faster browsing experience. (see note)

Note: these features require your Naim streaming product to be running software version 3.15 or higher. This is available on NaimUniti 2 from launch. An update for all other streaming products will be released in summer 2012. Check with your retailer or the Naim website for availability.

This will work now:

• Internet metadata. With this powerful new feature explore information about the current playing album from a vast online database.

Easy.

Now this is more like it! Well done Naim!

Cannot wait for full functionality after firmware upgrade.

Working well with NDX. Nice info feature. However needs a little refinement on compilations as it seems not to understand track arist or track performer. But on album artist and album name it works well.

Now it would be good if the referenced similar albums etc linked back into your music collection, without manually selec ting them... But nice feature anyway that I am sure that will improve shortly.

Is it only me that is disappointed with this update? After all this wait and still missing basic functionality like home button, track forward rewind, shuffle all function, battleship grey artist icons etc..... Added to this we have to wait until August for the playlist functionality!

Yes the info button is a nice touch but would happily swap this for a couple of the above

seems a little smoother, inf button fine  , but for ns5 another wait for playlist ,expected back button

Bit faster and slightly slicker on the iPad 3 - navigation is still counter intuitive.

Info function is a novelty, yet somewhat underwhelming after five minutes and positively irritating after ten.

Playlist feature - limited to those with the latest firmware (sigh)

Seriously - a year's wait?

N-Stream works but I'm finding it hard to get excited by the latest version - anyone seen the Sonos app?

Good job the streamers are so good.

I was expecting playlists to work but it seems we need to wait for yet another update to firmware. Fortunately I hope to have my new NDS shortly so hope this will have the latest firmware and allow the creation of playlists. I like the additional info features which makes the whole process much more like looking at the album or cd info than before.

Ok - so I'm feeling a bit grumpy - so a more considered view iPad version is still IMHO a disappointment but the iPhone version is oddly a huge improvement; is much faster and looks much better. Interesting the info feature is far less clumsy on the IPhone. Since I use the iPhone version more frequently this is a real positive. iPad 5/10. IPhone 8/10. Tog

still behind sonos, and their are at the cheap end of mark  can do better redo home work and hand it it for marking

Works perfect on my iPhone 4S in combination with my SuperUniti (v. 3.13.00). This version is much smoother and they improved the layout. As I can say for now, it's also more stable.

I am seriously underwhelmed.

This is much like buying a car and it only half works - so after a year - they offer to paint it a different colour.

I can't help but think this is a low priority - perhaps if we had to pay for the app then it might be a higher priority - like the new DC for the power supplies.

Perhaps I being unduly cynical ...

Actually the info feature is growing on me... But some compilations work yet others don't... It would appear perhaps that album name isn't used as the match... So am intriqued what it matches on... My mojo discs match up and I can navigate into the artists which is neat.

32 pages of extra info... discography... history of artist...  what he or she had for breakfast... absolutely fantastic !!

Shame about the 'home' and 'track playing forward / back slider' facilities, but 10 / 10 to the developer chaps, is what I say, for what they have acomplished...    now, heads down for the next release, please.

Summer 2012? As in.... now? When does summer start according to Naim?
Posted on: 25 June 2012 by CariocaJeff

Works good on my uniti. Like the info button. If could only get the lyrics as well I'd be over the moon. Only thing taking the shine of it that most of my album art is missing after updating the firmware on my qnap nas yesterday. Call into qnap support to solve.

Unfortunately, once again this shows that Naim are excellent at hi fi equipment engineering but middle of the road when producing software.

As another poster has mentioned, Sonos has all these features plus much more and the update procedure with Sonos is light years better than with Naim.

Why do Naim find it so difficult to produce software of an equivalent quality to their hi fi equipment?

Posted on: 26 June 2012 by Tog

Apple's Remote software was written by one guy - almost as an afterthought - (they later took it more seriously)

There is no doubt that the guys at Naim build great hardware and have the electronic engineering expertise to produce seriously good streamers. However, the competition has caught up and the market will become increasingly commoditized over the next 18 months. Naim can of course retreat to the high ground and defend themselves and their margins using their premium brand identity or their engineering as a sheild.

Yet the control software is a key part of the user experience and no company can be good at everything. Linn understand that long term survival means more than simply selling high end kit to very wealthy people hence their willingness to make sure that their product range is served by a responsive and rapidly developing open source control point.
