Peter Gabriel "Up"

Posted by: blythe on 28 June 2012

A friend brought round his newly acquired 180g (I think) vinyl double album of "Up" an album which I had never heard before.
My friend had been harping on about it being a superb record and also "the best sounding album I've ever heard" etc. I doubted him.

However, I must say, I was absolutely STUNNED by the recording and the content which I enjoyed immensely - I shall be interested to do the comparison to the CD when it arrives and if disappointing, I might have to part with some serious money to buy the same vinyl copy that he has!

I noted an old post by "Polarbear" saying his copies of the same album were "dull and lifeless". I sincerely hope the difference on CD isn't as large as his post might suggest.

blythe,

Its one of my fav most played PG albums on CD and Vinyl.

I have a promo copy of the CD with a extra track on it.

zoverstocks a amazon seller are doing the original CD for 2p.

You should order this live DVD if you think the album is good?

This will blow you away.

Its a fantastic concert on a round stage.

You will not regret it.

I still can't believe what I heard last night !

"Up" is a good album indeed, but I think "So" is even better - though his debut and third albums remain my favourites.

Blythe,

The DVD is better than the album.

All the tracks and more.

When the n/Vi came out it was my most played music DVD for a year.

Its just brilliant.

Stick on your screen and let the surround do its job.

Ball coming down.

You will know what that means when you watch it.

Great cover too. Many people miss the out of focus shot of Peter's face behind the water droplets. It's up there (no pun intended) as a great PG album, but of his more 'recent' work, I still like US over anything else.

Stu,

I totally agree... Growing Up is a great live concert and certainly on my Top 3 list. And it also features Peter G's daughter Melanie on vocals which is kinda cool.

I love this show! Saw it live in Montreal and the DVD really reminds me of the spirit of the show. A great artist at the pinnacle of his art.

Yip,

When i last saw Mel she looked like she was going to make Peter a Grandfather

She might of given birth by now.

Will find out this weekend when he plays down here along with Bob Dylan and many other great bands.

My kids are going to have a brilliant weekend AAA passes.

I have it also. You're right, very good stuff. I think I'm gonna watch it this evening...  And I just put his Hit/Miss compilation... Brilliant. Your kids are lucky, I would love to see Peter play again... Saw him on his last tour - the symphonic thing, what's the name of it again? - but that's not for me. Boring. Too bad.

I would play my 200g  vinyl copy of US more if it was not such a git to lift of the LP12.

Its such a perfect fit on the plater.

The smooth rounded edges give one nothing to get hold of though.

Elbow get the DVD.

You will love it man.

These boys even come up from under the stage to help out on vocals.

Stu,

Saw the show in NY and LA. Same show I think that he bounced around inside a plastic ball and rode a bike around the stage during Solsbury Hill I think I have the CD of the actual show I went to as if I remember correctly he was selling CDs of the specific gigs around a week after each one.

not seen the DVD, so I'll get a copy.

Blythe,

Well what do you think?

Only just returned from a week away at Classic Le Mans and sitting on my doormat when I got home was a DVD

I watched it last night and was very impressed. A truly great live show, with great songs, however, a slight down side for me is that the show includes Salisbury Hill which I have never liked.

Apart from that, ABSOLUTELY STUNNING and will definitely spend a lot of time in my DVD player!

"Up" on CD (which arrived before I went to France) was very good, though less inspiring than the 200g vinyl my friend brought round, which inspired my original post. I may now have to buy (at great expense) a copy of the heavy-weight vinyl......

blythe , Motors coverage must rate as one of the worst ever made TV programmes. All talking heads very little car porn.

PG , Up and Us  CD and DVD

Posted on: 11 July 2012 by Gale 401

How can anyone not like Salisbury Hill?

One of the best Debut 45rpm singles of all time imo.

And you have Naim down the bottom.

I see you can't buy the Up 200g vinyl from Peters site any more so its going to cost.

Howard,  I have read the post a few times.

Where does the motors coverage come into it??

You could argue that his first single was  Silent Sun, released in 1968. It just shows the benefit of allowing artists to hone their craft. Pity the young emerging artists who get listed on the BBC  Sound of .... Polls and are expected to be brilliant before they've recorded their first single. The Knife was pretty good, though!

Keith,

OK.

Picky of what..

Stu.

Posted on: 11 July 2012 by KRM

Sorry Stu, massively picky, I agree

I also agree Solsbury Hill is a great song. It brings back memories of posters for the first album on the Underground in London. They had the album cover and the line: "expect the unexpected".

Next to that fit bird in the swim suite coming out of the water holding a bottle of rum.

I used to stand infront of those at Earls Court while changing trains to go to Parsons Green and Putney every night of the week.

Good old days.

OK,

It got me a bit  .

I always thought Euro Sport did a good job of it.

I was told you can now get the La Mans Radio live on the internet now.

After the the race though.

I watched bits live in bed on my screen via computer link but fell asleep.
