virgin upgrade
Posted by: ken c on 01 July 2012
yesterday i received my new virgin hub to replace my modem/router as part of the virginmedia speed upgrade -- i was expecting a few setup issues with my NAS drive and UnitiServe/SSD, but i am pleased to report there were none when i finished the installation this morning. its good when things just work without too much hassle...

Is it a 'Superhub'? If so watch the lack of wireless range and issues with digital radio. Mine only used as a modem as a result. G

Mine streams the radio ok but the wireless range is shockingly bad. G
The issue with Internet Radio is not a blanket "works" / "doesn't work" issue - with my SuperHub (and those of a few other customers) stations such as Absolute80's will drop out and then restart every so often - anywhere between every 20 seconds and every 20 minutes as far as we can tell.
Switching the SuperHub to "CableModem" mode and using a different router (with the SuperHub simply being used as a modem) does seem to resolve the issue.
Unfortunately Virgin weren't exactly helpful in resolving the issue and so all we could get from them as advice was "use a different router"...

as a matter of interest Phil, what router are you using with the SuperHub in 'CableModem' mode?

I use a DrayTek 2920 (non WiFi version) and an external Pakedge WAP-W3 wireless access point.

Putting the router into modem only didn't resolve the issues for me so I asked virgin to replace my superhub with the standard modem early this year and haven't had a single blip since. Appears to be common practice now as they immediately agreed when I asked and the guy said they have had many requests to do this.
Using the Cisco RV220W router with the modem and they work well together. Streaming radio works brilliantly through it.
