Repair Time Feedback: What's Normal?

Posted by: Zo on 03 July 2012

Fortunately, I have not required many repairs as a Naim user; however, my DVD5 has been the exception.  It was with the distributor for 6 months for repairs/service.  The unit was purportely repaired and returned to me.  To my disappointment the poor performance issues were not resolved.  I sent the unit back for repairs 2 1/2 months ago and have yet to receive any additional updates regarding the repair of the flawed system.

Just wanted to understand if this repair/service timeframe is in line with most repairs, or is the DVD5 an exception?

What's wrong with the machine?

My 2 primary issues are:

1.  HD outputs do not function, both BNC and DVI outputs will not output signal.  S-video is only working video output.
2.  Drawer does always open (60% of time) when button depressed, drawer mech can be heard but drawer fails to open.

The HD video output issues are consistent whether the DVD5 is connected to my Loewe Aconda CRT or Pioneer Kuru 141 Plasma.   I have also tried routing the signals through my DVDO VP50pro and Edge processors rather than direct connection to the video monitors.

My DVD5 is a bit quirky to respond to commands in general and requires a bit of patience at times, but I am not sure if this phenomenon is simply part of the DVD5's idiosyncrasies as mentioned on the forum by other users or unique to my player.

I have been working through the issue with the Canadian distributor.  The Naim dealer which I purchased the DVD5 from is no longer in business.

Has it ever been sent back to the Naim factory in England to be looked at?

Zo, I've moved this to the appropriate HT forum.

Bottom line here is that this one can really only be answered by the distributor.  It may be that they are awaiting a replacement board - I say this purely on the assumption that the DV board has suffered some sort of chip breakdown, judging by the reported symptoms. But really it's just speculation on my part and I would suggest you press the distributor for an update on progress.

Yes, the DVD5 can be a bit quirky, especially when you change from one disc type to another.  I guess this down to the way that Naim have effectively designed it to act and think like a DVD player on DVD discs and then as a CD player for CDs.  Put a DVD in a machine that thinks it's a CD player and it will normally not recognise the disc.  Naim found a way around this but it can take a moment or two to work it out.  And then there's the STOP button that is also EJECT too.  A dedicated eject would be better here and might have avoided some instances where eject doesn't always work at first press.  Anyway, that's just for starters.  But overall, despite it idiosynchrasies, I can forgive the DVD5 just about everything for it's wonderful performance.

You forgot to tell the full story...

We are waiting for your approval of the repair costs.

And I will not discuss a specific case on this forum.
