NDX problem

Posted by: Peter W on 08 July 2012

Yesterday I switched off the NDX/555PS for 1 to 2 minutes while rearranging the cables behind the Fraim rack. I turned the NDX/555PS back on, and something abnormal happened. Normally the front panel buttons' back-lighting will go off together with the display screen, but now the "OK" button, "arrow right" button, "arrow down" button and the "STOP" button remain lit constantly.

Has this happened to any of you, and how did you fix it? I will power down it for 24 hours and see if this will help.

Hi Peter,

Take it back to your dealer, they will check it. And i also face this problem last time, they just reinstall the display cable then resolved the problem.

Hi marcobb

I did it myself, just a five minute job. Now everything is back to normal. Thanks very much!!

Hello,

I have the same problem (but with different buttons which stay on) since moving house. I took care to use and to put the unit in its own package but it seems that the transport by the moving firm has damaged the NDX. This display problem is the only problem I encountered, all NDX functionalities work fine as before.

I opened the unit but don't see something wrong about cables near (behind) the display screen. I did not touch to anything for the moment. Have you more precision about the "display cable" and its connector location?

I took some photos if I can post it on the forum...

I don't want to send it back to my dealer since I know that the transport can damage it again. And my dealer is now at 700 km...

Thank you

Have a look at my reply in the above thread. I don't know if it is any clear to you.

As far as I can recall there is just one ribbon cable connecting the display board to the main board. All you need to do is unplug and replug carefully (disconnect the power and wait a few minutes to let all caps discharge first). If you are not confident leave it to your dealer.

Thank you for your reply. It seems to be more clear in the other thread. I will take a look this week (I did it several months ago and don't remember exactly, but for me there were several cables that could be linked to the front panel buttons...).

I've had the same issue with both a ND5XS and a NDX - (but surprisingly not with a SuperUniti/UnitiQute).

Just need to reinsert the ribbon cable.

Richard Dane will be along shortly to tell you that you might invalidate your warranty because of potential damage to sensitive electronics due to low level electrostatic discharge.

Either get it to your dealer - or buy a anti static wrist band that you're supposed to wear when dealing with sensitive electronics. If at the dealer, insist they wear one of those - Somehow, I doubt they will. ;-)

Maybe a reply from Naim to this thread is in order - I had complained to them about this issue about a year ago - I hope they've changed something in the manufacturing process to make this cable a little more sturdy.

I've copied the thread to Naim Tech support.

Worth remembering that opening up the case may well invalidate your warranty.  An anti-ESD wrist strap offers the bare minimum of protection (and then only if used correctly).  Your Naim dealer should be reasonably well versed in ESD precautions.  There's a good reason why technicians in the factory where anti-ESD clothing, shoes and work on special flooring.

Oh great. I just got my NDX back from service (the streamer-module has been replaced), I wanted to re-install it and now I have the problem mentioned here: the logo and the up and right arrow lite up, but that's it...Just wonderful.
