Last Classic Album that will stand the test of time?

Posted by: Andrew Porter on 09 July 2012

Whilst watching  BBC 3's Classic Album programme on Black Sabbath Paranoia the other night, I started thinking about which modern album of the last few years if any could be called a "classic" in time,or if nothing in the last few years, what was the last album which could truly have "classic" status?

Although there are many that I would consider classic, they would be more personal choices and would not qualify for true classic status. But then it saddened me to think that candidates might probably be Back to Black-Amy Winehouse and even possibly 21-Adele, I hope I'm wrong because I personally dislike both albums. I could well imagine the beeb doing a program on Back to Black in 20 years time but due more possibly to the artists death, ensuring immortality?

Any valid suggestions?

I don't think so, Basia first album was of course TIME AND TIDE.

Probably her best, but London Warsaw New York is also very good.

A classic album that will stand the test of time. Feast Of Wire by Calexico springs to mind, nearly ten years old and still playing it. Superb Album.

This album was a classic the day it came out.

20 years old now.

In another 20 years it will be even bigger.

Hi Stu,

Good shout.

What worries me is that 20 years sounds a lot...just that we are talking about 1992 are we not...now, that does not seem like 20 years ago...gulp...I'm old!

To choose albums by attractive females is certainly not the worst way to predict classicism, but it cannot be the best.

From the recent past The National , High Violet. would be my suggestion of an album that could become known as a classic .

Extremely  well produced  album that takes a few listens then draws you back for another listen. Dark in parts ,melancholic but very well written.  All killer no filler  a phrase that fits perfectly with this..

Classics from the last two decades or so,, My bloody Valentine, Loveless , Echo and the Bunnymen Ocean Rain,, Stone Roses Stone Roses ,, Nirvana Nevermind ( though i prefer In Utero )

Jonathan Wilson Gentle Spirit. Superb album nicely recorded. Ok it has its obvious references to Neil Young/ CSNY etc but nonetheless its very good indeed.
