So, who's it gonna be then?

I've been a bit of an Olympics agnostic up until now, but, living in London, I'm starting to find people's enthusiasm and excitement rather infectious. I think if everything proceeds (relatively) smoothly, GB equals or beats its Beijing medal haul, the suns shines, Bolt astounds us all again, and the Aussies get thrashed; everyone will forget the transport chaos, the heavy-handed branding, Coe's insufferable smugness, the security farce and all the discomforting contradictions of the modern Olympics.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what Boyle's come up with for the opening ceremony - fingers crossed that we'll get something that's a mixture of the bonkers and the tacky; the high-tech; the self-deprecating and the pompous. In short, a mixture of the two things we in Blighty do better than anything else: humour and pageantry - something as far from the semi-fascistic organised displays we saw in Beijing four years ago.
Apparently the bookies are doing very good business on bets placed on who's going to light the cauldron in the stadium tonight.
So, who's it going to be? Roger Bannister? Steve Redgrave? Becks? Wills and Kate? BoJo? Sir Macca? Bradley Wiggins?
My money's on Sir Steve... anyone else?

As a Scot I'm (temporarily anyway :-) ) proud to be British. Well done Danny Boyle.

I'm glad I have the whole show recording. Take a bow Danny Boyle (nice touch sneaking in 'Trainspotting'). It's been a wonderful sound & vision show and look forward to watching it again.

The French "invented" the modern Olympiad. At the time (1890s) French was also the language of international diplomacy.
