Classical Music Album Covers

Posted by: Kevin-W on 30 July 2012

Like many on this Forum, I follow the "What are you listening to..." thread with great interest.

One thing I've noticed is how much classical album covers have gotten a lot more imaginative over the years - back in the day you'd generally get a portrait of the composer or conductor/soloist, or else an old still life or landscape painting.

These are some of my faves I've seen recently:

I also acquired from a junk shop a stash of 1960s/70s records on the Concert Hall label - haven't played them yet but some of the covers are fabulous:

Anyone got any faves of their own?

And I also like this.

A fabulous book that deals with Classical LP cover art is Jaco Witteloostuyn's beautiful, The Classical Long-playing Record: Design, Production and Reproduction.

How about this classic bit of imagination.  Quite a leap...

Some leave you thinking.........what were they thinking.

This reminds me of tacky trick guitar playing  70s rock bands.

Talk about stereotyping...

I really love this cover, almost as much as the musik on these near mint vinyl lovelies.

Can't pretend to really understand what this doodelry is all about but it looks fasinating.

Can't pretend to really understand the musik either, and that sounds fasinating too : )

Lovely painting Debs. Looks like a Paul Klee - if it's not, it's a very passable pastiche...

Just seen the price! £125! Bit out of my range but I'll put it on my Xmas list.

Saw Daniel Barenboim on the telly a few days ago and thought how old he looks now.

But i suppose we all age as we get older : )

Kuma and I had a brief discussion of this piece by  Alex Steinweiss  on the 'What are you listening to' thread. I hadn't seen it before, nor heard of Alex Steinweiss, now thanks to Kuma I know his artwork.

I really love the 50's jazz albums covers, and I think this has their style, plus a formality suiting classical music too. Perhaps too formal for some, but for me this is a real gem of a cover.

Thanks Kuma.

Jamie.
