What Were Your Fav Albums From 1977?
Two off the top of my head to start.
.
Steve have you listened to much by the Television Personalities, as they are a truly great band - in 77 they were part time punks, but they went on to record many classics including the phenomenal she's only a grocer's daughter.
Richard - I have to agree with Out of the Blue, but to me ELO is hallmark of quality as they were just about the most consistent band of the 70s ... possibly only ELP came close with their initial 5 or 6 albums.
Though I wonder if Roy had stayed with ELO what effect that may have had ... still Roy had his Wizzard ... commercial singles and strange complex. almost avant garde, albums
All the best, Guy
With all repect, folks. I used to listen to ELP throughout the 70's but they had reached the end of the road. ELO had a great folowing among post "Woodstock, where should I go now" followers but lost their way and were looking for some guidance.

It is probably true that Works was their last great album and even it did not match the previous output ... though the final side is a triumph ... somehow ELP will always stand the test of time for me ... Keith Emerson's solo work is superb. ELO knew when to quit and did at the right time, but the 11 albums they created were all high quality and in Eldorado they hit the jackpot.
77 was so interesting because there was a mixture of the new and the traditional .. however much of the punk/new wave was swept aside on the radio by the emergence of disco (a genre I cannot abide) and then the 80s groups who put appearance above talent.
Of the early 80s only Martha & the Muffins amazing albums This Is The Ice Age and Danesparc really survive for me. The 80s were just so drab. It became fashionable to knock bands like ELO, Caravan and Camel because they were inventive and could really play (strange).
However in 77, ELP released a blistering version of Fanfare for the Common Man and the epic Pirates. These were tremendous works, so we have to forgive them Love Beach a year later.
Strangely the 80s saw the emergence of lots of synth groups - the good Human League and Orchestral Manoeuvres and the plain awful like New Order ... however none of them could play or write like Emo ...
Dickie Dirts.......I had almost forgotten about them, And 1977 was the year of this by the Big Man.
It was turned into a Dickie dirts in 1979 i think.
Lots of big bands used to use it to practice in and fine tune for tours.
I saw Led Zepp over two days testing in there after just walking in off the street with a mate.
The roadies let us stay and come back the next day for a whole run through.
Just one of those in the right place at the right time days.

Guy,
Punk, to me, was just an irritating noise. I did like The Stranglers* but they weren't punk anyway. As for Morrissey/Smiths, just don't get me started. I never understood what anyone saw in The Buzzcocks as they struck me as just a mediocre pop group. And why anyone, especially Peelie, could like the amateurish tosh of The Undertones was completely beyond me.
Diff'rent strokes...

*Best version of Walk On By ever!
And who could ever forget this one. Kind of came out of the blue really...
A wonderful album and still one of my most-played chunks of vinyl.

+1 ... forgot Exodus was a 77 album, but it is stunning as should be on everybody's essential album list.

I had forgotten the wretched thing. Thanks very much for reminding me.
Its a classic.
It was a right pain when it came out, and many trips to four ourprice shops( all very close to each other) over a month to source a flat copy with no clicks on a couple of tracks though.
Stu.
This is a great live album from 1977.
This band should of been mega around the world in 1977 imo.
But music was changing.
This was there second album after there brilliant 1976 first albumToo Close For Comfort .
Funny thing is If they were together now? They would be massive.
One of the best live bands i have ever seen.
