Unable to Screen Share with Mac Mini
Posted by: badlyread on 05 August 2012
Hi All
Has been running a Mac Mini headless for several years now and never had a problem but yesterday I was unable to see what was going on with the Mini (Screen Share) on my iMac.
Mini connects via ethernet to a 1 Giga switch which also has the SuperUniti going into it. The switch then leads to a Virgin Hub. Use uPnp for accessing library which is on a separate HD connected to the Mini. Need to see what is going on for tagging artwork, playing Spotify (via HiFace), downloading from B & W and software updates.
Help much appreciated but take it easy on me please (not a super geek, just your average small geek).
Cheers
Neil
I used to have this problem from my Mac Book Pro when it went to sleep or I closed the lid to put it to sleep. try re starting the iMac and see if you can share screen then. if not restart the Mac Mini. You can do this without a screen by just holding the power switch to turn off, wait a while then press the power button again. Then try screen sharing.
Hope this helps.
Hi Spartacus
Have already tried that to no avail. The problem would appear to be at the Mini's end as my MacBook cannot share the screen either. I have connected the Mini to the TV so I can see what is going on put all seems fine (Screen Sharing on). It normally 'just works'.
I'm not to up on IP addresses and that stuff so I'm hoping it is that sort of thing.
Thanks for your interest.
Neil
You are right it normally does just work. there is usually no need to get into IP addresses or anything really technical and I don't like messing about in those areas. I would start by checking connections and perhaps swap the ethernet cable between Mini and switch. Sometimes if there has been a disconnect of some description the router gets the IP addresses messed up or there is a clash of addresses. A restart of the router normally clears this.
Just for information I Have my Mini set to Share files, Remote management and Use DHCP with manual address.
Have you recently upgraded to Mountain Lion on the Mini ?
If so try entering
VNC://<userid on the mini >@<ip address of the mini>
via Finder>"Connect to Server" option on your iMac
Its an issue thats been reported via the Apple Support forums.
Thanks for the replies.
No running latest version of Lion.
Took it to the Genius Bar and there was a problem - something to do with my network setting but nothing obvious. They did some resetting and all is now good (I know Apple products are expensive but the service from the Genius Bar is super).
Happy Bunny again.
Thanks
Neil

Screen switching between my Mac Air and an LCD TV screen which all happened seamlessly in Lion seems to need me to go into display settings every time and force the image onto the TV in Mountain Lion. Pain in the ass. Seems OSX suffers from the same 'one pace forwrad two paces back' thing that Windows is famous for.

A update to Mountain Lion is due very soon. May sort it out for you.
it just works though. You actually dont have a problem?????
Because I only use my Mac Mini for music I want it to be very stable so I have left it on Snow Leopard because it does not need to be that up to date. At some point in the future I may take it to Lion but if there is nothing to gain it will as it is.
@Geoff P - any upgrade of any software is likely to produce some instabilities/glitches, if you install any new software or operating system very soon after release you are very likely to run into these things. Some call this "the bleeding edge" rather than "the leading edge". To save all the hassle that comes with this I normally leave any new release for a couple of updates before I put it on any of my computers.
IMHO early adoption can be a world of pain. The big difference between Apple and Microsoft is that they have stores that you can go into and get help from a "Genius".

Fair comment. I knew this was possible and since I don't HAVE to have my Mac running ( retired dabbler) I had a go with Mountain Lion. TBH its got nothing else wrong with it the way I use it and there are a couple of nice little features in it.
