Saving playlists?

Posted by: Jason on 05 August 2012

I have a playlist which was created from music solely stored on a USB stick which normally remains plugged in the back of my HDX. Today, I removed the USB stick to add some new music.  Having added the new music and plugged the USB stick back into the HDX, I decided to play this playlist.  I went into the playlist menu, selected the playlist in question but then realised there were no tracks showing in the playlist.  The playlist named had been saved, but the actual tracks within are gone and it cannot be played.

A little annoying as this had over 150 tracks in this play list from various albums.  I obviously don't want this happening every time I remove the USB stick to add music etc.

Any one else had this issue or able to say how I can prevent this happening again?

I have had this issue and unfortunately I don't know how to prevent it. I no longer make playlists from a stick. In fact I'm on nStream now so it's moot.

Ok Harry, thanks.  On a side note, been reading your latest posts with interest, glad to hear the NDS is settling in well...enjoy!

Anyone else any ideas how to safeguard playlists created from USB stick?

I have had similar issues with playlists and there is another thread going on this subject just now.

I think the only solution is not to use playlists at all, and instead to turn your playlists into virtual albums ie, copy the tracks you want, in the order that you want them, into a separate folder in a music share.  Your HDX will then see this as an album.

Have you tried using the desktop client software, I thing there is an option to rebuild playlists

I generally use Desktop Client but haven't yet found the rebuild playlist feature.  Maybe someone else can explain it for the benefit of both of us?

On desktop client, click the tools tab. Under the settings and functions Go to system functions Click on tab to "restore playlists"

This is silly - there has to be a better way of delivering playlists - Sonos, Apple and Logitech don't have these issues because they considered the user first. Tog

Thanks all, I'll have a try with that and see how it goes.

Ok, thanks to CBR600, I have worked out how to do this.  Only problem is, to be able to restore playlists, you must have saved them first.....which of course I had not done!  But for the future, once finished amending or building new playlists, go into the DTC as CBR600 details above and then above the "restore playlists" tab, there is a "backup playlists" tab.  Once backed up, it can be restored.  Hope this helps prevent someone else's loss of playlists!

I have the SSD version of the HDX (music stored on a separate NAS) .  The backup function in DTC only works for the internal storage version for my SSD version I have to make my own backup arrangements to a second NAS.  I haven't yet tried the restore playlist function in DTC but I suspect that it too only works for the internal storage version, in which case I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with playlists.

I found the same.  You can see the playlists on the HDX and you can copy them out to a NAS drive using Windows file copy, but you cannot restore them or copy them back - HDX administrator profile prevents access!*

There's a crack in the pavement here for SSD variant owners that could do with being looked at by the boys in Salisbury... please.

*...unless any one has discovered the elusive admin password for the HDX, not that it would be allowed to be shown on the forum of course, so this is really a 'tongue in cheek' comment - admins please don't ban me!

looks like there may be 2 different solutions then.

I have the 1TB HDX but do not store any music on the HDX. All my files are on a 12Tb NAS drive and are ion a single music store.

I have no problems restoring my playlists in this set up !!

must be something particular to the SSD?

Speaking from a position of ignorance it seems likely that playlsit data is stored along with the music, wherever that may be.

That is correct, it is stored on the upnp server, and if backed up from the DTC it is saved in the music store. I cannot actually see the file, but have just restored a playlist I deleted using the restore function.

I have checked and am pleased to report that the "backup playlist" function in DTC does work with the SSD version of HDX. I haven't yet had occasion to test the "restore playlist" function but if I can backup then I trust that I can also restore.
