n-stream / remote NDS anomaly

Posted by: G Hubregtse on 08 August 2012

Just discovered something I can't explain:

I have just received my new NDS - absolutely delighted.

Last night, I downloaded a 24/192 album from Linn's website, just to hear the difference. I have found that, if I select this album from the menu using the n-stream app, the stream is identified as 44.1 kHz WAV (on both n-stram and NDS display). If I actually use the remote control to navigate there instead, it identifies it as 192kHz FLAC (which is what it is on the NAS) - on both n-stream and NDS display.

I can switch between these two situations repeatedly, just depending on which device I use to do it, and providing I navigate away from the particular album and then back again...

Any ideas?

Hi Geer, this is not going to be any help to you...

192 FLAC files on my NDS show as 192 in Nstream and on the front panel, whether selected via nStream or via the remote control, BUT these files are from that hi-res tracks seller accross the pond, they're not from Scotland.

Have you made a backup copy of the file you downloaded from (that other hifi company).  If so, try deleting the one your NDS is reading and re-copying it. It probably won't make any difference, but watching my NDS, it goes through a process of 'analysing' the track it's playing before it displays the 192 FLAC data on the screen, so if there's any corruption, that could throw it - again unlikely.

I assume you are selecting exactly the same album from both nstrean and the remote, i.e. there is only one of it?

And what device is serving the digital stream to the NDS?  - again shouldn't make any difference.

There, I told you this would not be helpful, didn't I?  If this continues, then it looks like a wait until next week when Salisbury comes alive again.

Final thought, what version of software is your NDS running?  I assume 3.15.00

Final final thought... but it is a wonderful player, isn't it?  Just wait till you've had it a few weeks, it gets even better.

Fixed!!

Deleted and recopied the file from hard drive on PC to NAS, all working correctly now...

I had previously had my trancoder in the NAS on to supply the NDS with WAV files (as a result of the big FLAC / WAV debate on here). Despite turning it off to listen to the 192kHz file, I suspect that setting had got stuck in some cache or something...

Thanks very much... you deserve a NAP 500!

Hey, fantastic. Now you can sit back, relax and listen to your NDS getting better and better. Don't forget to leave it looping on an album overnight (with preamp muted?) - this'll speed up delivery of the complete NDS experience.
