All the bands I like are brilliant .....

Posted by: JamieL_v2 on 08 August 2012

All the bands I like are brilliant, really good musicians, but don't ever show off, their lyrics are just so clever and point out social situations that really make you think, but they don't lecture you, oh no, they would never insult you like that.

I got into most of them when I was a teenager, and then a few in my early thirties when the music scene got really good again, and just a couple I found on forums like this.

They all do lots of charity work, and always for the right charities, they like kittens, grannies and retired donkeys, and are such nice people that I really think they deserve a Nobel prize, I am not sure for what, but I do think they deserve a prize, that or maybe a knighthood.

Obviously all the bands I don't like are awful, I don't care if you like them, you are wrong. They do horrible things all the time, they are only in it for the money, and they never learned to play their instruments properly, that or they just show off all time, but not with any tunes that are worth listening to. I also think they are probably child molesters, I don't have any evidence, they hushed all that up, but I think I am right in that.

Lots of them came from before I was a teenager, or when I got a bit older, so obviously I had heard it all before. Quite a lot came from a movement that happened just after the really good music, and they had bad hairstyles, really bad ones, jeans that were the wrong shape too.

They also say they are going to leave the country when the politicians I like get in power, but they never do. I wish they would.

If only they had listened to the bands I like, they would have got it right, but sadly they didn't.

Even worse are the people who left bands I really like, and then started to make music I don't. Why? They were so good when they made the music I like. Sometimes someone left I band I like, and the band got worse. Why can't they all just ignore any fulfilment they want, and just churn out exactly the same album over and over, but getting a bit better each time, of course, just so that I can still like them. I hate them, and their hair got worse, or fell out too.

So there you have it, I could name bands, but you know who they are. We should start threads on each of them on the forum, so lots of people can say how bad they are, and then a few people, who have got it really wrong, can defend them, and we can feel really good that we know better.

How about starting with........

All the bands I like are shit.

Exactly how old are you ?

Jamie

That sounds very boring.

Seriously, I was thinking the same thing myself. Deep Purple, Little Feat, Todd Rundgren and Luther Van Dross have never released a sub standard album.

I take it you don't like Led Zeppelin, I have to agree. Never released a decent album, Plant and Pages solo efforts are woeful and I don't even think the other 3 member have released solo work. .

Thanks Kevin but... that's not what I meant !!! I'm asking the OP. It would help to understand his post.

I am the same age as everyone else here, isn't that obvious?

Great replies, Kevin, you are so right, and Fatcat, I don't like all the bands you don't like too, and far too may people overlook Luther Van Dross.

I'm not the same age as anyone on the forum and I disagree with everything you write and everything you have ever said since you were born............

And Luther Van Dross is good for your teeth.

P.S. Is there any point to your original post ?

Jamie,
Good thread and post.
It did make me laugh when I read it.
Will have a think?

Hi Woy

You are right, there was a point.

Lately a few threads have degenerated into 'I don't like that band, because they are not from my period of music' comments.

I just wanted to say that a lot of people form their love of music in their teens, but it doesn't mean that music from other generations is less valid.

I have been guilty of it too, I can't resist having a pop at Dexys, although sometimes I try.

Negative threads tend to spawn more negative comments about other bands. There is an unwritten rule that if you don't like a band, you don't snipe in threads about them. Someone who's comments I had read with interest, lose some of their validity then. I would hope it is more interesting to share music you like, and pass on music you disagree on.

I expect that many people on this forum are over 40, and come from a more tribal period of teenage music trends, thankfully I have seen much more eclectic tastes from those in their 20s I have worked with over the last decade.

This doesn't mean an uncritical approach to music, but just some appreciation that people have different tastes.

I thought making a joke of it might be more fun than a pointed argument, and might get some fun answers too.

I do find it quite tedious when people use extremes when posting about music they happen to personally dislike. "Absolute Crap", "Horrible", "Rubbish" etc. etc. etc. conveys nothing constructive or informative. A bit like the folk who like to tell us they don't find a joke funny on the Jokes thread.

Tastes change as you get older and more open-minded; for my part I've been rediscovering some of my old LPs which I'd bought many years ago and previously dismissed as not being to my taste but are now enjoyable. (Admittedly the equipment I now use is rather better). Getting into other genres can be difficult but it's a very worthwhile journey. IMO all music has merit (although I confess the joys of rap have so far eluded me) and the fact it's popular should alert you to the potential enjoyment it might give.

I agree.  I bought Wild Wood by Paul Weller when it was first released.  Just couldn't connect to the music.  About 3 years later my brother was raving about it.  I popped it on and properly listened.  Now it's one of my favourites.

I often find that the less accessible albums grow on you over a period of time and the more instantly accessible become boring more quickly.  That's not to say that you can't "shelve" them for a bit and come back to them.  Recently listened to Graceland and Out of the Blue (both ofwhich I massively overplayed when they were released) and they both brought back many memories and many smiles.

I'm in the same boat, I like most genres but don't care for Rap. However, there is one exception, the concept album "Tricks of the shade" by the goats. The lyrics are so thought provoking and poetic. The music is excellent, listened to it a couple of times and was hooked.

When I was at school the girls likes TRex or David Cassidy, the boys liked heavy metal or soul. As a metal fan I spent most of the time insulting or being insulted by soul music fans. I realised the error of my ways at the age of 18, I discovered not many girls frequented the local heavy metal pubs, they where all at the discos.

It doesn't only apply to music, it happens with cars, camera, guitars and dare I say HIFI EQUIPMENT.

I guess some people never grow out of that kind of thing.

Jamie,

The first time I read your first post I was a bit confused - probably the Polish beer. Now I get where you're coming from !

I really love Genesis, Dylan, Floyd, Wishbone, Cray, Waits, Black (Mary that is) etc. They are all really great, and MUCH better than the musicians that everybody else likes. Only I have supreme taste when it comes to music. Nobody else. So there

I agree wholeheartedly with your second paragraph Tony but the first is, in the spirit of this thread, absolute rubbish. It's nothing like the Jokes thread (objections there seem to be the result of either a)priggishness b)a desire to be offended c)a lack of perspective or d)sense of humour failure) - more the result of passion and enthusiasm for music. And it's fun. Disagreements over matters of taste are part of the enjoyment of music.

Some music is too bad to just ignore - Pogues, Dexys Midnight Runners, Bruce Springsteen, whiny autotuned crap, REM, Sting, Spandau Ballet, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Razorlight, 10,000 Maniacs and Keane all to be great steaming piles of doodoo, and have empirical proof of this fact: my ears, my brain and my heart.

If you want me to spend a long time explaining why, in an informative manner, I dislike these "artists" I can do.

The latest issue of Viz magazine describes him very well: a "lute-plucking bellend"

BRAVO Kevin.  I hate 'political correctness'. As you say, if your/my ears, head and heart say that a piece of music is crap, then we have every right to express that opinion.

Power to the People, erm I mean ears............... now, where's that picture of Wolfie Smith that i posted on another thread....
